I will take useless stats for 500 Alex. Ohio State is up 2-1 after 3 sets Maybe not such a useless stat after all. In fact, total points has been proven statistically as a predictor of overall skill versus luck in a small sample size or in a sport with statistically poor scoring system such as volleyball or tennis. Pythagorean expectation is a formula invented by Bill James to estimate how many games a baseball team should have won based on the number of runs they scored and allowed. Comparing a team's actual and Pythagorean winning percentage can be used to evaluate how lucky that team was (by examining the variation between the two winning percentages). Estimated win percent = RS^1.83/(RA^1.83 + RS^1.83) Summary: total points is a good statistical indicator of skill Summery for Ramp: Urban Meyer sucks

Also good move by Hugh occasionally bringing Beal in. I questioned it at first but she really stablilized the block

Well that was at least a fun match to be at! Side note: one of the most entertaining things to me as an away fan, expecially a positive vocal one, is the random ass fans that wait til the end of e match to talk smack. Turn around and taunt you, make the "I can't hear you hand signal." Y'all were supposed to beat us handily, you are the conference champs. I'm just happy we took it to 5 and I would have been satisfied with taking a set. Just makes you shake your head. You said earlier that you might be the loudest one there. So you're a loud fan (according to you) of the opposing team in a college sports arena. You're surprised you got heckled?

.. snip.. I wouldnt say SSS was having an off match, I just dont think she was setting up a good block on the outside the first 2 sets seems we do agree since blocking in the front row is among her responsibilities that Beal's presense significantly improved & schau set just fine for that time

I think Carlston sabotaged OSU with excessive delays and overcoaching. Instead of settling his own team down in the third set when Minnesota started playing better, he rattled his players with petty interference. He was calling all the sets from the sidelines and subbing out players the instant they made a mistake. It started to get in the players' heads and undermined their confidence and independence, to the point where they were looking to him for guidance instead of taking charge themselves.
Which reminds me: I really hate the video replay rule, and hope it's never implemented in volleyball. About half the challenges are bogus: coaches are just using them as timeouts. Worse, Carlston would stand there waving the green card around, not really calling for a challenge, but delaying the game by getting in the down ref's face.
Even after he got a warning from the refs about not coming back from a timeout in a timely fashion, he was still causing delays. Referees really need to yellow-card this kind of behavior early and often, otherwise the coaches will continue to jerk them around.

Excruciating.
Minnesota's passing was off and they were being outplayed strictly in terms of keeping rallies going. Still, they had Daly serving set points in both g1 and g2. I liked their chances.
Something clicked around 10-10 in g3 (if that was the score). Their block came alive, they started passing and they served better. I had thought the only way they were going to win was if OSU started making unforced errors. To Minnesota's credit, the errors weren't unforced and they dominated the rest of the match.
Then OSU couldn't rotate so Sandbothe could get back in in g5, although she had been slowed down considerably anyhow. Too many subs, in my opinion. But what do I know?
Nice to see the resiliency, yet again, from this team. I hope Rosado returns to form, however. They are going to need her to play like she was.

Replays absolutely mashed Minnesota's momentum several times tonight. I thought the same would happen in g5 (and I thought they only got THREE PER MATCH??).
Gophers lost every single one, I think.

He basically did the same thing in Madison...and almost got a yellow card.

thanks for the comments about Carlston .. btn2go cuts to stupid graphics for timeouts, challenges & maybe when jiminey cricket appears on the director's control board with no clue to the audience what is going on. seems overcoaching (or over-reliance on coaching rather than intuitive playmaking) kept mn down in the beginning & osu down at the end

Just back from the match......emotional ceremony for the seniors and families after the match, especially for Daly. Nice to have a win and the undefeated season at home. The Gophers were flat outplayed in the first two sets, in all phases of the game. The Gophers kept serving to tOSU libero Leon and her passing was fantastic. Other players were running out of the way to let her take serve receive. She was all over the court. To the Gophers credit, they found a way as the match went on to get the serve to other players and tOSU passing started to falter. The other big shift in momentum came when the Gopher block woke up and started to become a dominating force.
If the Gophers can finish business at Indiana on Saturday, they should be securing the Des Moines regional site. This was a big time match for the Gophers. If they end up tied for the B1G title with Nebraska, even with a head-to-head victory, I am worried the committee would grant favored nation status to Nebraska and give them Des Moines and ship the Gophers elsewhere.

Gophervbfan took the words out of my mouth (sorry about the saliva). Leon's passing on serve receive was unreal--I can't recall being more impressed with any player's serve receive--and the key to winning, I thought, was serving far enough away from her so as to make it necessary for someone else to receive serve. Other impressions:
1. Gophers had lots of trouble with Katie Mitchell serving. 2. Paige made several really athletic digs in the back row. 3. Daly didn't look like the usual Daly. Yes, she smashed a number of her kills, but seemed to me to be hitting an inordinate number of soft shots, tips--as if she couldn't jump with her usual velocity. 4. Wilhite with another strong match. A thanksgiving feast from a player who is often feast or famine. 5. Rosado did not have a good match. 6. This team has heart, definitely.
