"Right now" being the operative term. It's Player of the Year. Carlini has played extremely well all year--it's the team that has gotten better and better each week.

Not denying that. But that's not what he said.
Santana had more impact in the two matches the two teams played, btw.
They can give it to Lauren. Cheers.

While the B1G did not vote Sheff coach of the year in 2013, volleyball magazine did :-) and that was because of what they did in the tournament, not the league. I will add the VM may be the least credible magazine in the history of magazines. No disrespect to Sheff who is a marvelous coach and has done as good a job coaching their team the past three years as anyone.

Well, next to The Wisconsin Scholar, maybe.
(Sorry. I've been way too nice to Wisconsin lately.)

Sheff won it last year, basically because UW won the league. I think his work this year is more impressive than last year, but McCutcheon also did great, so basically its a wash and the winner gets it.

Here's what I think: A setter can win POY if the setter is on the championship team. It's just too squishy otherwise. In the absence of that scenario, I think it needs to go an offensive player, with tangible numbers. So you could give it to SSS or Santana.

I question the lists they put together very frequently, and they just all around aren't a very reliable source. On top of that, theyre work is not at all high quality. I remember on their all america teams a few seasons ago the misspelled sophomore for every sophomore that they included on the teams (I believe they wrote "sophmore" about 10 times in one article)

I know he won't get COY, but Aird took Maryland from a doormat to competitive in a hurry. He may have done the best overall coaching job from recruiting, establishing a culture, and squeezing every bit of talent from his players.

I find it pointless to compare outside hitters (all-around OHs no less) with setters, especially in terms of who is "the better volleyball player." Luckily, there's a setter of the year award so we don't have to. Are you saying, by extension, that no setter should ever win the B1G POY award?

I don't know how POY can go to anyone other than Carlini, but I guess that's just my definition of POY. My best guesses: COY: McCutcheon POY: Carlini & Santana SOY: Carlini FOY: SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS DPOY: Wong-Orantes or A. Rolfzen All-B1G: Carlini Nelson Santana H. Tapp Tashima Whitney Drews Wong-Orantes K. Rolfzen A. Rolfzen Drews Sandbothe Cole Birks Drews so good she takes two spots on the All B1G roster. Tashima over SSS for all conference would be a travesty. Tashima's good, but no way the setter for 6-14 Northwestern makes it ahead of the setter for 18-2 Minnesota. Whoops lol.

I like what Sheff has done with all the turnover from 2014 and how he's molded Carlini into even a more complete player. Strategically, he makes good in-game decisions and his team by team prep is as good as anyone. Why was he voted COY last year? He had an experienced team, best setter in the conference, and won the conference title. McCutcheon is in the same position this year, save the setter. And, took a team predicted to finish 5th to the top of the conference. He made many good strategic choices on matches and in line-ups (Schau as a DS? Who saw that?). WI returned the 2014 POY, the DPOY, an all B1G honorable mention, and a freshman team selection. So, the cupboard wasn't exactly bare.

I think most people here are in agreement that Hugh should win COY. Sheffield and Aird have also done marvelous jobs, but Hugh is the favorite.

I was surprised that the boards had set the bar so low for Wisconsin this year, I expected them to be very good.

Not sure which thread it was. It worked out, either way!

Has Poy ever come from a team not the conference champion? Fwiw, I think it's Santana. 2013 - Nebraska finished 2nd at 16-4 and Kelsey Robinson was POY. PSU went 19-1 to win the title and landed 4 on the all conference team. Hancock was named setter of the year.
