Sponcil sighting. Wierd that she is allowed to participate in this even though she redshirted this year and is also transferring to UCLA. Obviously doesn't affect their eligibility. She played this entire year.

Interesting day. The venue is pretty good, USAV built a center court with bleachers. Not like a FIVB/AVP style stadium court, but a nice setup for a collegiate event. And having a tournament in Hermosa Beach is always a good idea.
There was some very good play, and there were some teams who had clearly checked out mentally after the end of the NCAA season. It's not like they weren't trying, but the fire wasn't there. Lot of distractions for some of them as well - like I saw one team finish their match, grab their stuff and full on sprint to the parking lot in order to make their graduation ceremony.
Still, teams like Claes/Hughes, Knudsen/Roh, and the Witt's handled their business. And a couple of teams I've never seen before from TCU and Georgia State played quite well. One of the Georgia State players, Chelsea Ross, is just a beast - cannon for an arm, but also showed a lot of imagination in her shots. Really entertaining to watch.

Yeah, looking at the scores I was imaging that the 'SC pairs, other than Claes/Hughes were not totally into it. Makes sense.

geddyleeridesagain, spot on, #2 for GSU awesome. I am an east guy, saw her twice this year, it's basically avoid her at all costs. Saw Rice lost twice, assume her hand still bad. Saw Knudsen/Roh, impressed..

Saw Knudsen/Roh, impressed.. Also, it seems like it took Pepp a long time to figure out not to serve Ross. She got blocked a couple of times, including match point (I think), when she got some trap sets - but she was basically unstoppable. Just went over, through, and around Brittany Howard all day long, despite giving up about 6 inches in height. And does having the last name "Ross" guarantee you'll be really good at beach volleyball or something? I may have to legally change my daughters last names.

So the Pepperdine 1's, 2's and 4's all finished day 1 at 2-0. And the Pepperdine 4's took down Sponcil and Slattery, which I found surprising. I wonder how many of these teams are just exhausted to play again around the time of finals/graduation, and right after NCAA championships. ( haze...Sponcil redshirted her sophomore year, and played freshman and this junior year for LMU...has 2 beach seasons left at UCLA.)

Yeah, good question. USC's #5 pair is seeded ahead of their #4 pair, at 8 and 10 respectively. Seems too high to me. The seedings were done by the pair's combined USA ranking points. Pairs without points were drawn.

It's weird how Georgia State keeps picking up stud grad transfers, like Carico a few years back, these are players teams like Pepp/Hawaii/FSU could have used.

Didn't Hawaii take Steton's best player from last year???

Does anyone understand how they seeded the bracket? Looks like Claes/Hughes are seed 1, playing the winner of a play in match. To me it looks like Witt/Witt should be seed 2, and play the winner of the other play in, but they don't. Maybe they are trying to avoid rematches from pool play?
