I agree. I think Reid is a tick better than Eric but I think the long run Eric might be the better choice. Reid has the money which might make things a little different also. 😉

You'd have to think in 4 years Zaun's potential upside is far greater than Reid's, not necessarily as a better player, but as a significantly higher room for getting better.

But can Eric play right side? Ryan would have to play left for the over in 2 plays.

Ryan choosing to play with Reid on the FIVB next year is a pretty curious one. He could probably get a much better parnter, with more FIVB points, and younger, considering US defenders are a dime a dozen right now in comparison to the blockers. Who? Mayer?? don't think he wants FIVB, they tried that. Allen?? Not sure he's dynamic enough for FIVB DelSol??.... Tayor is the only young defender above Reid. I misread before and I thought we were only talking about young defenders. Reid has played some good volleyball this year, but its still a toss up if he is even a top 10 defender on the AVP 1. Taylor 2. Nick 3. Patterson 4. Hyden 5. Mayer 6. Allen 7. Rosie 8. Schalk Are all better than him right now (those aren't in order) Loomis, Zaun and Frishman are also comparable to Reid. None had close to the caliber of partners Reid had this year, and all had comparable results.

Hyden, Mayer, Schalk and Allen are all out for playing FIVB. That leaves: Taylor Rosie Zaun (didn't include him in last list b/c no/low FIVB points) Priddy Frishman

Good question, he turns 36 in about 45 days. He did play 4 FIVBs with Slick.

Zaun > Reid long term for sure, about equal now therefore Zaun + upside is pick.

I would argue that of the defenders listed, Allen, Mayer, and Patterson have reached their peak with little chance of further improvement. That's based on their age and 10+ years of playing full time on the beach. Maybe Rosie and Nick as well, but Nick's not leaving Phil. And assuming Jake doesn't retire either so Taylor is unavailable. Perhaps Ryan asked and was turned down by Rosie. Reid probably has more short-term upside than any of those other guys. He's improved significantly every event and has less than a year's experience on the beach. He also has access to the best coaching/training. A young guy like Zaun or Frishman may have more long-term upside but also more risk of fizzling out. Worst case for Ryan is a poor year with Reid, but he'll still be one of the top 3-4 American blockers at age 34 and he'll have his pick of one of those other guys a year from now with 2 years left in the Olympic quad.

I was responding to this when I realized Taylor and Theo almost have to play together next year. What other option does either guy have, other than staying in their current mediocre partnerships?

Does anyone know if Rosie would like to get back into the FIVB mix, or is he content with just the AVP's?

For their best chances at 2020, this seems the case right now. I'd love if USAV would subsidize Gibb for a year, and put Zaun with him and see what we got in him.
