After seeing the Manhattan semis, its clearer than ever the two best US players are Phil and April. But who is second best on either side. For the women I have no idea, I think we all wanted it to be Hughes, but another bad loss shows that isn't the case.
Maybe Emily Day? Summer? Branagh? (ok maybe a little hopeful there)
For the men its even more confusing

Maybe Sara and Kelly are still tightening things on their end.
It's their first year as professionals straight out of college, they've done impressively in some matches, but when the time comes and there's pressure, they tend to drop the match.
But you're right, it's hard to say. Maybe Summer Ross?
USA women's have not had impressive podium finishes this year.

Lauren Fendrick?
She was impressive with blocks at World Champs. Just wasn't her day today at Manhattan Beach!

If Lauren was second best, then she and April would have accomplished a lot more this year. As it is, Brit/Day outperformed them. I dont think Lauren is even top 5, particularly given how good Brooke/Summer have looked as opposed the hot mess that was Lauren/Broooke last year

As I couldn't pick one of the women out of a lineup, based on men I saw play this weekend, Rosie guy I'd pick as partner for overall game behind Phil. Theo close second though distance between Phil & field is chasm-esque.

Theo only fired up yesterday during the last match.
Are we talking overall season?

And even when they played on Gstaad, she hadn't fully recovered. Good thing her toe was more of less recovered by the World Champs.

Women's. Umm maybe summer? She's the best setter, sides out really good and digs pretty good when peeling.
Men's. Hyden

Theo only fired up yesterday during the last match. Are we talking overall season? Yep. Strange as it sounds it may be Rosie or Slick. Both have excelled with weaker partners and Stafford has won, which is something not many US teams can claim, and Rosie is in the finals for the 4th time in 6 tournaments

As much as I adore Hyden, can't pick him for lack of hands alone.

As much as I adore Hyden, can't pick him for lack of hands alone. If him and phil played together do you think they would win the avp? He sets well enough for phil. Lol. The way I look at this question is who would you team with phil and them win it all? Hyden would be the only player on the avp I could say with phil they win 8-9 events. I can't say that if he teamed with Rosie, crab, gibb, Paterson, Theo etc

For the women, I'd still say Kerri Walsh Jennings. There are so many players with potential, but no one has taken that big step. If not KWJ, I'd probably go Summer Ross as she's still growing. Day/Hochevar are one of those teams were the whole is greater than the sum of the parts....the chemistry is just there for them.
For the men, I go Taylor Crabb. He's got the ability to be really good for a long, long time.

April is healthy & fine now...She just has a partner that was a little tight thinking about her 1st Manhatten Beach title. That was Lauren's best chance at one too....
