A setter must attack when she has no other choice if the pass was bad and too close to the net, but a great setter will always try her best to create a set no matter what... This is an awfully strong comment! "Always" and "no matter what?" Every good setter I've ever watched has made the choice to attack plenty of perfectly good passes when it is to his/her team's advantage to do so. To me it isn't an absolute, but rather a question of striking the proper balance. That balance is different on every team. No one is confusing Hancock with LoBianco - arguably the best thing Hancock does to help her team is attack - so she should probably do that more than other setters. On the other side, she was passing up setting a struggling Havelkova, Dixion and Ortolani out of the 2nd line. Not exactly like passing on setting Thaisa, Boskovic and Zhu! I suspect you are going to see Hancock attack more than you might like, simply because it is in Monza's best interest that she do so.

They are no longer called Rexona, they are called SESC/RJ (Roberta,Monique,Drussyla,Jucyeli,Gabi Guimaraes, Gabi) - They are still favorite to win, they just beat Minas in the Brazil Cup in 3-2. It was a close game. But this season they will no longer have any international player as in the past few years the ones they hired did not perform well ( Anne Bujis, Courtney Thompson, Logan Tom). They will just save their money. But their OH Gabi is injured and the other Gabi ( the libero from the NT) just got injured and her season is over. And Carol (MB) is playing in Turkey this season. Other 3 teams are at the same level, Minas ( Hooker, Rosamaria,Macris, Mara, Carol Gataz, Leia), Osasco (Tandara,Bia,Fabiola,Ninkovic), Praia Clube ( Fawcett, Fe Garay,Fabiana, Waleuska,Amanda,Suelle) and Barueri ( Naiane,Erika Coimbra,Edinara,Jaqueline,Thaisa,Skowronska) Bueri was just promoted to the Superliga, and they are playing really well, they lost for SESC and Osasco by in 3-2 only, and they are playing without Naine/Thaiza both injured (Thaiza will start playing in December), Jaque just joined and Skoworska will arrive this week as she was injured as well. edit: there`s another strong team BAURU ( Paula Pequeno, Juma,Arlene Xavier,Yoana Palacio, Shara Venegas) also Fluminense is decent ( Michelle, Renata Colombo, Sasa, are all former NT members). The Superliga is really strong this season ( more than ever) Minas which is a favorite, they won the state championship by beating Praia Clube, and only lost the Brazil Cup in 3-2 for SESC/RJ, but they already lost 2 games in the Superliga for 2 teams which are not among the favorites (Pinheiros and Sao Caetano) Osasco almost lost for Valinhos, and Valinhos just joined the Superliga 2 week ago because one of the teams lost a sponsor and would not be able to compete, and Valinhos replaced them. And of course this is the Italian board but I did just see the news that Minas coach and DH are trying to lure Logan Tom from New Zealand to come play for them this season. Seems they like that piece to carry them to the top. We’ll see if anything happens. May be doubtful but intriguing nonetheless. Guys. There is a Brazilian League Thread. Here. volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/71055/brazilian-leaguePlease take it there.

www.legavolleyfemminile.it/?page_id=47322&idgara=720304Conegliano beats mid-tier team Firenze (H. Tapp, Santana) in four sets today and Hill is named MVP for the match with 23 kills hitting 0.450 with solid passing. Megan Easy goes down with a injury mid match, she really has had bad luck with injuries in her career. Bricio replaced her well though (with the exception of passing). De Krujif had a great day, they're still waiting to get Samantha Fabris back from injury to strengthen the right. Daly had an okay day but Firenze was led by Indre Sorokaite with 20 kills. Hannah Tapp had 5 kills hitting 0.500 but wasn't utilized much. High level match overall. We'll see what the injury for Easy is but even with her out Conegliano looks like a favorite this season. Firenze will probably make the 8-team playoffs but doesn't have strong enough setting or middles to challenge for the crown.

I like the way Firenze play. They put enough pressure on Conegliano though didn't get a win. Congrats to Hill, Bricio and Easy. I hope Easy's injury is not serious and she will recover quickly. Hannah's attacking looks better than last week, but there're still problems with the setting to middles. On Saturday we will be watching Scandicci (Carlini) vs Monza (Dixon, Hancock).

And word of advice. Many people, like myself, probably use a tool like Google Translate to gain some context and understanding of the Italian news about the matches. The translations of course can be very entertaining. They can also be more, um, interesting. Sarah Wilhite (who auto-spellcheck wants to turn into "Sarah Wichita") plays for UYBA. One of their key players is Italian Federica Stufi. Don't say I didn't warn you when you plug her quotes into Translate. Like when she was asked about expectations prior to the season:
Stufi: "Questo è per noi un punto di partenza, come ho detto alle mie compagne. Oggi ho visto carattere e atteggiamento che non avevo visto durante il precampionato. Bene la prestazione, peccato per la sconfitta. Cosa mi ha impressionato dal punto di vista tecnico in questa partita: sicuramente Bartsch, è come me la ricordavo".

Dang, hard to hear. I know some of us (myself included) have gotten on her in the past for passing and whatnot, but nothing but best wishes as she begins the road to recovery

She just can’t stay away from injury. Her run for Rio was cut short due to injury and now this happens again. Wish her a good recovery

That sucks. She seemed so healthy during college but pro career seems plagued with injury. I wonder of the likelihood of her recovery to keep competing at an elite level. Wishing her good health.
