We are starting to veer off the thread, but not like we are going to start a new one Anyway, priority will be to qualify at the earliest time possible - which is World Cup. European teams will be battling it hard usually at this tournament (as there are many strong ones wanting to qualify but so little spots). I can then see resting some starters and starting to mix up rosters (with veterans and up and comers or back ups) for tournaments such as VNL. Feels like we have done that in the past - and that will usual be the final evaluation before Olympic roster.

I think you have the order reversed. Continental qualification (NORCECA) is after the World Cup qualification. Although NORCECA is less competitive now since Cuba and DR aren't as strong, it doesn't make sense put all the qualification eggs in the NORCECA basket. sending a B or C team to a once in every four years major event will be a huge disrespect I agree. Intentionally sending a B team wouldn't make sense in either circumstance. We're defending World Championships, so of course there's extra incentive to repeat, and it makes sense to use the VNL as tuneup. The NVL is the tournament where sending B teams has the least consequences, which is why it happens.

Did USAVB stream the Womens VNL and now the Mens VNL at the Junior Nationals conventions centers for the 1000's of players and teams to watch coming in and out of the venues...or waiting for next match.
Gee one would think that would be awesome to have a few flat screens set up.
just musing
Wanna sell an Anderson, Larson, Russell, Shoji, Lloyd jersey? $$$$$$ and interest and promotion

I understand what the World University Games are. Definitely don't think they are ANY opportunity for players with A-Team potential to strut their stuff, ESPECIALLY since the majority of the players are in college. And this obviously isn't our best "young" roster (taken from the 2017 team), considering there is zero overlap other than Rivers: GARDA Madeline Marie HARBIN Danielle Lexes SPEAKS Margaret Virgin JEFFERY Valerie Nicole MC DONALD Jazzmine Marie MARIANI Ashley Nichole WIMBUSH Imani Nailah HORTON Katie Ann VAN GUNST Teegan Morton RIVERS Krystal Denise JORDAN Jenelle Andrea TUCKER Jordan Michelle Case in point, it shouldn't be viewed as a substantial development opportunity for potential Olympians. It's true that that particular roster doesn't suggest that The U Games lead to anything, but rather than dismissing them, it makes more sense to view them as a missed opportunity, perhaps due to a failure of evaluation, coordination, timing or priority. I know of several players in the past, on both the men's and women's side, who used the University Games as springboards to the NT or to pro careers (one or two of whom were athletes who completed NCAA eligibility but hadn't completed graduation.) The key point is that all of these opportunities are controlled by USAV and perhaps a more comprehensive and coordinated approach to the evaluation, selection and training for those opportunities is required.Completely agree.

The World Championships is where we should have seen the roster we just deployed for 5 weeks during the VNL. The VNL would have been a nice opportunity to mix in some younger players, but also give some of the vets the chance to rediscover their "gel." Another consideration is teams have more tape against our completed A-Team after the VNL to prepare against for the World Championships - would have been cool if MBH could have had her rise during the WCH. Teams will have her scouted better next go round.

For the WC it would be best to send a different roster with an upgrade at opposite (and/or another OH if MBH plays OP), a better libero pair, and possibly a different backup setter. In that regard, the lineup used at VNL showed these weaknesses that can be corrected at WC.

Are they players on the PanAm roster? Because those players are largely untested against elite competition. The WCH seems like a risky first real test. BTW - I think the fact that Wilhite isn't on the PanAm roster means she'll probably be on the WCH roster (given her injury isn't that serious?). We may see a change a libero considering JWO is on the PanAm roster, but the only logical replacement would be Courtney? All in all, my guess is the WCH roster stays the same, MAYBE one change.

Not sure who they will be, but I expect at least 2 roster changes for WC. Of the other players I don't know their injury status, how they've been doing in USA gym/tryout, etc. so this is pure speculation: OH/OPP: someone that stands out in Pan Am. Guessing one or two of Lee/Anae/Lowe Libero: Benson or Courtney Setter: possibly Carlini or Poulter if they click in Pan Am - but I thought both our setters improved during VNL

I'm not saying there shouldn't be changes - I'm saying I don't think there will be changes. (And again, I think these changes should have been explored during the VNL.)

I think if the US wins the world championships in September then next year the 12 just take the whole season off and the whole season should be played with B & C players. these are all Club players so taking the summer off won't diminish their skills as they have a full Club season coming up before the Olympic year. that would be a pretty bold move by karch compared to what other national teams do but I think it might be a wise call because of the age of his team. OK I like you....but I wish I did not read that....lol

To be honest, it really doesn't matter if they are replaced, because even at the VNL, they weren't really given that many chances to play (except for maybe Drews), and the WCH is a much more important competition. I agree with you those are the most likely candidates - but I don't think Wilhite and JWO got enough playing time at the VNL to justify getting bumped and Drews played just as well as Murphy did until the finals. Unless someone plays lights out better than Kingdon (who replaced Wilhite) and JWO, I see them being the "safe" final members to keep the A-Team "gel" going.
