I can see at least 6 players from the 2019 indoor team playing on the beach team. They are Julie Rasmussen, Kyra Hanawahine, Bailey Choy, Braelyn Akana, Norene Iosia, and Hanna Hellvig. Out of these 6, Norene Iosia, and Hanna Hellvig I am thinking could make one of the flights, with Hanna Hellvig most likely making the biggest impact. The only reason I mentioned Kyra, Bailey, and Braelyn is cause they are from Hawaii. I somewhat disagree with your list. Iosia, we already know how well she plays. Rasmussen and Hellvig, I think, would be great beach players with Hellvig's experience and Rasmussen's versatility on the indoor court. Akana -- maybe so, but this depends on her ability to pass and set. Choy -- she had experience with Utah, but I've seen her play live. She is a good passer and setter, but she lacks firepower with her attacks. At one point, the opposing blocker decided to not block anymore and just dig. Kyra -- I think she may be too short, but I have to wait and see if she even attacks or can efficiently attack on sand. My list of who could benefit the beach team and play, in order of likelihood: 1. Iosia 2. Hellvig 3. Rasmussen 4. Van Sickle 5. Choy 6. Wagoner/Akana 7. Westerberg I am also hoping Ross play beach. She has potential!

She has potential! I agree with Ross, but I do think I would put Van Sickle above Rasmussen since Van Sickle played at flight #1 at Oregon (although only for one season). Kyra also played on the beach for Oregon at flight #5, and with all due respect, I don't think she would be anywhere near the top 5 flights for our beach team. Akana's sister has beach experience, but I don't think that Akana will choose to crossover until after her senior season.

The problem -- and I"m not sure it's even a "problem" -- is that when your beach team is good and indoor recruits are coming in with the prospect of playing both indoor and beach, the chances of that recruit making one of the flights on the beach team are medium-to-low. So, you've got indoor players like Emma Smith, Gianna Guinasso, Angel Gaskin, Kendra Koelsch, and Annie Mitchem who gave it a go but never cracked the five flights. (To be fair to Koelsch, I don't think she really tried out for the beach team.) So, the idea of good indoor and good beach is great but all those recruits should expect a hard landing when they realize all the beach girls are pretty damn good and the competition is going to be tough. I actually don't know how good the beach game of the incoming recruits are in comparison to the other beach girls. I think we all say how good so-and-so is but that's always in the abstract. When you actually compare them with actual beach players on the Hawaii team, it's not easy to gauge their skills. Hanna Hellvig, Mia Johnson, and I'm sure there are some names I'm leaving out -- who knows how good they are wrt the current Hawaii beach players? I agree the biggest "problem" when you have a competitive beach team, is players getting playing time. I think, with any team, players need to be aware from the start that they have to "earn" a spot on the beach team. Nothing is a given even if you are a really good indoor player or a good beach player. Maglio and Taylor are the two most successful cross-overs of the program. Iosia played at the #4 and #5 flights in 2017 for part of the season. A few other players were Higgins, Anderson, Castillo, Guinasso, Sibley and Mitchem. A few played a match or two at the #5 flights and several were at the #6 flights. Higgins actually played at the #4 and #5 flight as well (2014) but didn't crack the starting line up later on. I think some indoor girls know they won't crack the lineup but play to improve their skills, fitness etc. and some may even want to pursue beach after their indoor college career is over. I think it is an even tougher pill to swallow for some of the beach girls who may potentially lose a spot to an indoor player. Bottom line, players need to get over the fact that the "indoor" players are not "indoor" players when they are on the beach team. They are "beach" players like anyone else and equally deserving of a spot if warranted. If you want to play in the top flights, you have to work hard and be one of the top 10 players with good chemistry with your partner. Maybe the bigger "problem" is for Hall having to manage all the players and the emotions that go along with it. You take the good with the bad. Hall benefits and so do the players and the program because you are fielding your best players. If an indoor volleyball player plays another sport (e.g. Morgan Hentz Stanford, plays volleyball (played beach volleyball) and went out for the track team. She was good enough and therefore on the track team) there doesn't seem to be as many issues. It may be more black and white in some sports...but, if you deserve a spot or a starting position (and want it), then so be it. I agree with your post. There is one view point that I haven't noticed in any of the discussions. On behalf of beach scholarship players, there is an imbalance in opportunity. A player on indoor scholarship, can choose to walk on to the beach team. However a player on beach scholarship doesn't have the reciprocal opportunity as they are not allowed to play indoor. I can see why this might lead to resentment. Just wanted to introduce another nuance from the beach scholie athletes perspective. In the end, the best team is the goal.

Well the 2019 recruits are all moved in. So that concludes the first half of the thread title. We still have to wait for the amazing Hanna Very exciting to see her complete the team. Light a fire under the girls.

Mia is a great addition to the wahine. She reminds me of former wildcat Madi Kingdon.

BVS would easily make the top 5 flights.

Where does Harlee Kekauoha fit in? She was a three time All BW indoor player and would have been a 4 time All BW if she didn’t get hurt her senior year. I see her similar to Iosia in terms of her overall game.
Harlee is not a “crossover” from the UH indoor team but she is somebody that can give those beach only players a run for their money.

Hope she can build strength A lot of setters bump set when the ball is high because it’s really easy to double if you take it with your hands. Much harder to time the overhead set with a high ball.

It seems like she likes setting the right side too. Maybe because of her preferred hitter - hopefully we can get that player too! The last Wahine I saw as a star right side hitter was Nikki Taylor.

It's unlikely that Wagoner will play basketball. In order to play basketball, she has to be on a basketball scholarship, due to the NCAA scholarship hierarchy.

Yeah, I noticed she bump sets a lot more than she needs to. Yes, there is the occasional really high ball, but even some regular height passes that are off the net she'll avoid using her hands.
