Our opinions don't matter. If Ah Mow likes her -- and there's every indication she does -- then she's In like Flynn. I don't think Ah Mow posts here. So I have to ask the HI fans instead. If you don't feel that you are qualified to reply, fine with me. Howzit BB Based on what I’ve seen at the matches she’s played in, Riley is a solid contributor in the back row for the Wahine. She needs to develop her hitting if she wants to start as a front row player. If that doesn’t happen, many posters here believe she is good to start as our libero next season unless Hanawahine pulls an Okino and drastically improves in the back row.

FWIW, i thought C-Mack said in a pre-game, either the LBSU or the Poly weekend, that he went to a practice and Hanawahine was the best defender on the court. I’m not saying that she could have done better than Rika’s spectacular last month of play, but it’s interesting he’d say that and it bodes well for next year.

Agree that UH will need consistency from their L position next year but I'd argue that it's actually an opportunity for a significant UPGRADE. Even though Okino has definitely been better defensively in the second part of the season, her passing has has still been an issue for a very good Wahine team. The stats tell a story of Hawaii playing very well this year DESPITE a poor service reception. And yes, this is largely due to Okino. Anyone who watched the Wahine play saw Okino struggle (sometimes seriously) with SR. In fact, according to the professionals over at the analytics site Volleymetrics, her passing score, for the season, was is 2.13 (out of 3). Now that's a composite score including every time she was aced, produced a perfect pass or touched the ball at all in SR. To put that in context, you'd expect the Libero to be the best ball control player on the floor but both McKenna Ross and BVS both passed 2.16 on the season. The best Liberos in the Big West this year passed considerably better; Dickson (2.24) & Fleck (2.34). Of course Harward also passed a 2.17 but I'm on record saying she's overrated, so I wouldn't get too hung up on that. In fact, you all saw probably the best season of passing from a Libero in recent BW history in 2018... Akiu passed an UNGODLY 2.41 on 606 balls. The difference between 2.13 and 2.41 on a 3 point scale is absolutely enormous in terms of results and attack efficacy and I'd argue it's only due to the quality of setting that the Bows have had that it wasn't an even bigger issue. That is to say, I believe L is actually one area in which UH can significantly improve and I wouldn't be too concerned about a change at all. Anyway, just thought some might appreciate a different perspective. Pulling for the Bows this weekend, regardless! Wow! I don't even have access to (or haven't tried to access) Volleymetrics data and I knew all this intuitively!

With the two scholarships Hawaii has, the obvious going to a setter. I say the next really important position to give is libero. No question. Now, if a big time outside comes our way, great. But Hawaii is loaded with hitters. I suppose having Van Sickle and Wagoner as libero prospects is possible, but I doubt either will be expected to play libero full time. Which means Hanawahine, Gong and Via is all we have.
Would love to see Danielson come to UH as a walk on... but she could be worthy of a scholarship too IMO. She's that good in the back row and has potential to be another Ka'aihue and Kahakai.

Ah Mow has exactly ONE scholarship to give in 2020 and she needs an upper class (not necessarily "high class" but more like junior/senior) setter. I don't know how she springs a scholarship for a libero unless someone on the team is going to transfer out. (I'm not starting a rumor. I literally know nothing re. Wahine inside scoop. I'm a sock puppet.)

Recent highlight video from potential recruit Allie Andrew (2021) Not sure how serious she is in committing to Hawaii, but after seeing her recent highlights, I think she'd be a great prospect to convert to the outside. Her reach, approach and swing could really be something on the outside. Didn't look like really impressive top-tier HS volleyball right there tho. Still, if Baylor is after her too, we know she's good.

Norene Iosia --> Kate Lang Bailey Choy --> Anna Kiraly I believe Rika Okino was on an athletic scholarship and McKenna Ross was not on any scholarship.

Is this other Euro outside another pipe dream or for real? I'm also excited about the transfer portal being open again. I will say this, the offseason recruiting period will be a lot less exciting than last year's haul of nine players lol. But with Hawaii doing so well, maybe some 2021's will begin to commit. We only have one so far in Mia Johnson out of Texas. She looks like a good one. Live arm and six rotation outside!

Robyn, Angelica, and company are doing a phenomenal job recruiting. They are bringing the Wahine program back to glory days level.

Seriously, I dont think even Shoji brought in a class this amazing as the nine that came in this year. Of course, you don't always have nine scholarships to give. But still... exciting days ahead!

Still, if Baylor is after her too, we know she's good. I heard somewhere(Maybe from Tiff Wells or Cindy Luis) that Allie Andrew wants to play both indoor and beach volleyball. If that is the case, UH should be someplace where she should be. We have a nationally ranked indoor team and a nationally ranked beach team. Perfect for her. Baylor might be offering her for volleyball only. Not sure she can play both vball and bball with such an overlap in the season. Baylor's basketball season will be half over when Baylor's volleyball season ends. Baylor doesn't have a beach team(as far as I know) so Hawaii seems to be a good fit for her. Heard it is between Pepperdine and us as of now.

Us and Pepperdine? Is that even a valid question nowadays? LOL, jk. I mean, their Beach team is great but their indoor has been a tad above average for some time now... come on Andrews, BVS's family coaches you. Hawaii is where its at

Brutus Buckeye , ya know, the proof is in the videos. Almost every Wahine match is on youtube. The stats also don't lie. Perhaps, but that would be a lot more time consuming than simply asking those who have already watched most of her games what they think. R.Wagoner falling out of the starting lineup got its beginnings in the mid-season slump against Irvine and Fullerton. With Rasmussen and then Van Sickle out, the 6-2 setters for middles system was faltering. Against Fullerton the Wahine went down two sets and Ah Mow needed to make a change to stop the bleeding and regain team confidence. In set three she put Iosia back into her hitter/setter role to keep her on the court and lead the way back. Iosia came through and hit .300 for the match with 9 kills, and the team accomplished a reverse sweep. With Iosia now hitting, Wagoner was no longer starting.
Next match against Cal Poly (a 0-3 loss) Wagoner came off the bench for Ross (who was hitting negative and getting targeted on serve) and played the rest of sets two and three, hitting .276 with 6 kills. At this point in the season the team wasn't playing well, it was searching for a line-up, and they needed to get a win on the road at UCSB. Ross had just turned in a dud game against Cal Poly, and Iosia had only 2 kills and hit .000. No Rasmussen and no Van Sickle, and Westerberg and Akana weren't looking comfortable hitting from the pin. Wagoner was good off the bench at Cal Poly, but not enough to turn the ship.
The team meeting after the Cal Poly loss must have been a tough one. The team wasn't playing well, Rasmussen and Van Sickle weren't available, and the coaches needed the team's seniors and leaders to own it and step up, and the coaches needed to trust them to do it. Against UCSB they went with Ross, Hellvig, Iosia, and Westerberg at the pins, Igeide and Williams in the middle, Choy and Iosia setting, and Okino at libero. Westerberg wasn't getting the ball down, getting only one kill in ten attacks, hitting .000, but she was a blocking presence and helped against Ruddins and Froley. Ross hit .300, got 12 kills and was solid and key to the win. Williams, Igeide, and Hellvig all stepped up big. Iosia only had two kills and seven attacks hitting .143, but UCSB knew they had to respect her heavy arm. It was a three set win against UCSB on their floor, and Hawai'i looked in control the whole match. It was a turn-around point in the season and I think everyone on the team sensed it.
Ah Mow stuck with the lineup she used Against UCSB for the next match against Riverside, and then against Davis, but against Davis the team went down two sets to none. Van Sickle was available if needed, and they needed her the rest of the way to pull off the reverse sweep of Davis, with Westerberg departing after the second set. After that, except for Igeide and Hellvig who had a lock on starting positions, the rest of the freshman have been used sparingly off the bench.
Wagoner, Westerberg, and Akana all have the potential to start next year. It will depend on who puts in the work and can up their game. Wagoner needs to up her hitting% to consistently above .200 with some .300 games sprinkled in, and she can break back into the starting lineup. If Wagoner focuses on the libero postion and works for it, it's likely she would win it. The libero position is a heart and soul leadership position for the Wahine, it's not a step down or back. Westerberg needs to be comfortable at both the middle and pin, and if she is going to start it is most likely going to be if Igeide or Williams falter or if she can make the jump to pin. Akana will start only if she can make the jump to pin and learn to play some back row.
