It used to be like that in the late 1990's... sigh. They filled Maples to the roof in a match against UCLA in 1998. When Coach JMac was still at U-Dub, Maples used to get 4000 or even 5000 people for matches against Washington.. but the Pac-12 Network helped kill attendance by putting matches at odd times... and Stanford's athletic program-wide tendency to circle the wagons and focus on their program and university alumni didn't help. Coach Shaw didn't want boosters at road matches (except Cal), but he did have lots of activities for them at Maples. That died when the university took over fundraising.
In hindsight, that severed many boosters' ties (across all sports) to the team. Why support a team that acted as if whether you gave money didn't really matter... and that the alumni were the only ones that mattered to them? Every single road event I've read about for Stanford Volleyball hasn't been for the local fans... it's been for the local alumni. Stanford's 2018 Big Game watch party in NYC was exclusively for alumni and their guests. They are acting like a program that doesn't want any fans... and, all too often, they're getting their way. AD Muir talked about changing that, but most of the people I talked to at the time thought he was just blowing smoke... and he was.

It's true. The Nittany Lion (uhm, "bobcat" wink wink, nod nod) telephoned friends after abandoning the shrine, explaining that "I'm not getting any younger, and that shrine gig is a tough one -- low pay, really no benefits to speak of, and they never let me eat Russ Rosenberry ice cream. When I ask, they just laugh -- guffaw, really -- and toss me a few mice or chipmunks or squirrels. I mean, rodents are fine, but Russ Rosenberry, c'mon. Really tasty! I've headed out to Wisconsin. They have a university with a badger for a mascot. Two big for me to eat, but really a sharp dresser. I could learn a few things."

IMO . . . throwing an unnamed player under the bus at a press conference is a way to not take responsibility as a coach for the result. Not good form.
Russ didn't throw anyone under the bus. He stated that Nia said the right thing at the team meeting and another player missed the boat regarding the message they were sending the team.

Not to mention people are constantly standing near and touching the shrine. It's a cat, so no wonder it wanted to wander off. And, as rampageripster has mentioned, the Lion wears no clothes. He understands the concept of clothes, because he wears a scarf (and occasionally a basketball uniform). At least Bucky wears a shirt.

I think people are confusing competitiveness with grumpiness or ego. I love the fact that Russ still has that competitive fire burning inside him. Russ is demanding and his teams are always in the mix to play in the finals.
Anyone who's listened to his pressers knows that he loves his players and gives them kudos and props when they play well. He also calls out players, from time to time, when they don't do what's expected. Many times he's taken the blame for bad coaching decisions and NEVER takes credit for big wins. He ALWAYS gives the credit to the players for winning.

I don’t think it’s so much old school as just being real with his players. I like how he doesn’t baby anyone and holds them accountable for their play. I’m assuming he’s not a proponent of “participation trophies” which honestly I wish there was a lot more of in the sport. If people want to know what true egocentrism is, take note of Sealy at UCLA who generally deflects criticism as far away from himself as humanely possible. Case in point, firing both assistants who if given the chance, out coach him every time head to head. I hope each of them finds a spot somewhere. But I digress, Minneapolis get ready for the Card baby!!!!

Yes my opinion is that he is an egotistical jerk who throws his team under the bus so he doesn't look bad. IMHO.
This is one of the most ignorant statements I've read on VT in months, and that's saying a lot.
Just going by what I see and hear. I'm sure you probably know more about him then I do but look at Hugh Mcutcheons post game and RR. Who would you rather have your kid play for.

Probably the guy who’s won 7 titles. Greatness isn’t for everyone. Only the strong minded survive. It’s the prob with the younger generation. Everyone wants to cry that their feelings were hurt. Not a good look. I’m being completely serious when I say we’ve become a nation of crybabies. Whine till you get what u want is what’s being taught and it starts at the top with everyone in government. Doesn’t matter what party. Whining all the time from both sides when they don’t get their way What has happened to this country. It’s become so soft. All the extreme sensitivity is gonna destroy this country.

This is the last thing I'll say. I was raised by a Marine vet of Korea who was a lifetime Cop. I had to bounce a quarter off my bed after I made it crying wasn't allowed neither was hugging. Love my dad but I wasn't going to raise my kid that way. She is tougher then I ever was.

What does crying not being allowed and not hugging have to do with anything I was referring to? I never said someone couldn’t cry or be hugged in life. What I’m saying is people are so sensitive everything bothers them
