Colleen Ward. Bartsch gets a lot of the credit for Illinois’ 2011 run (and she deserves it), but Ward was just as good, maybe even a little better in the tournament matches. Also, whatever happened to her? I’ve barely heard anything about her since she graduated. This is not accurate. Ward got 1st team AA that season while Bartsch got 3rd. Ward was also a monster in club, ranked #7 in her class (well ahead of Bartsch), and was definitely the team’s go-to that season. Hardly underrated. She played professionally for a couple of seasons in Poland and Italy before retiring. A better candidate would be someone like Brianne Barker (setter from Oklahoma, graduated same year as Ward, Bartsch, etc). Didn’t go to a big name school, but she was one of the most technically sound and talented setters I’ve ever seen. NT potential if she wasn’t 5’7” Bre Payton also comes to mind.

Oh yeah - Brianne Barker was good!!! Loved watching her play - that was a good period for Oklahoma with Boulavsky and McLaurin.
Speaking of them, the coaching change has made an immediate impact - McLaughlin hopefully will be the next Barker - she's really good!

Sara Clark; Stanford (1996-9). A MAINSTAY on 2 NC teams ('96,'97). Great overall defense too.
Barbara Ifejika; "" (1994-97). Essential(!) member of Natty teams three out of four years! VITAL.

Bryn Kehoe, Stanford - first EVER Freshman Setter to lead her team to the National Championship (2004) - she was Super-solid her other three years (with 2 other Finals appearances). A Rock! Love Kehoe, but I don't think she was underrated or forgotten. Maybe I'm wrong. In the BIG picture - even w/ SU fans - their points-of-reference Don't Go Much further back than Alix +/or Inky: really! Since the Penn St. dynasty, everything gets 'foggy'.

Also, whatever happened to her? I’ve barely heard anything about her since she graduated. I enjoyed watching Ward as well. What was the story behind her departure from Florida? I thought initially she & Murphy went to Florida so they could play together. Conflict between player - coach - & third party

Although still an active player, I think Lauren Barnes (DS at Minnesota) could fall into this category as we look back on her playing career after she graduates.

Lauren Van Orden - UCLA. Led the Bruins to a NC and I don't believe ever won any awards. Incredible run by a player that no one saw coming.

Haley Crone - Always thought USC was the wrong choice for her.

Brittany Hewitt: her back injury really hindered her attack during her junior year and influenced her decision not to play her senior year. Too bad, she was a fantastic player and even better blocker. She had excruciating back-pains, shooting pains that traveled down to her legs, Lily Kahumoku had the same problem, for Lily that year she took off really helped her.

I would say so. She probably isn’t forgotten yet since it’s only been 2 years, but she didn’t win any major awards, was an incredible defender and was always willing to play any position she was asked.
