Chileans take set one 21-18 but Italians catching some momentum at the end of the set. Several bad breaks in that first set for ITL. I’ve got a feeling this one goes 3.

Who is the woman that's announcing? She keeps mentioning that Adrian must have played a bunch of indoor based on his setting. Adrian was basically a beach guy in the Florida area right?

Yikes...Chile up 3-0 in set 2. I will say the net has not been the friend of the italians.

Oof ITA down 11-4 in the 2nd. Chile is covering the quick sets well.

This one is over. ITL hitting everything out and when they get it in bounds they are taping and easily dug. 14-7 at the technical.

Looks like Italian’s fairytale runs out here. Grimalts up 14-7 in set 2.

Chile has been super clean and Italy the exact opposite.

Looks like the wind really made it difficult for Italy to run their quick offense. Plus the Grimalts were serving pretty tough too. And Adrian couldn’t seem to put the ball away in transition.

Just tuned in but just the eye test on Adrian man he has shed some serious lbs and although they are catching some bad breaks thus far he looks far more physical and quicker. I’m just learning about Rossi in this tournament but from what I’ve seen he seems to be a great counterpart stylistically for Carambula. Exactly what I said about him earlier, physical condition light years from where it was, now dude deserves to be talked about.

I honestly think that the way he and Rossi play is more like that the game will resemble in the next 5-10 years. Maybe not to the extreme they do it, but tempo just keeps on improving and proving to be more effective. Eventually the most physically dominant players will adopt it as they continue to improve ball control and they will just magnify it. I watched the match against Slick/Allen as soon as the finals finished and it was astonishing. Back jumpset 1’s, back jumpset shoots to the pin, setting tempo on first contact, you name it. Also that little soft topspin jumper Adrian brought out a couple times was dirty! This pair has potential. I don’t know why I had never seen or knew of Rossi but he is gifted.

At the end of the day it’s the first decent team Adrian faced and he couldn’t side out good enough. I said it the whole tournament, serve Adrain every single ball all that fast paced stuff and he will make mistakes eventually which you can’t do against a good team. While they are very fun to watch I don’t see that style winning events, way to much room for errors

While they are very fun to watch I don’t see that style winning events, way to much room for errors That Chilean team is not better than the US teams or if they are it isn't by much, they are just more flexible, faster and used better strategy. The trouble with that style is if you have a team that can put pressure on you from the service line or a good blocker that can move laterally, the effectiveness is lost. The best quicks of the weekend were the Estonian team, but for every one or two they got, they gave up another point. The US were too stupid to put pressure on Italy the way Chile did. Even some basic strategy adjustments like serving high and deep, anticipating where Adrian is going on certain sets, which was very pattern in the matches I saw etc. Its a great tactic for that team, that couldnt compete otherwise, but once other teams scout it, watch film and use countermeasures (plus any time in the wind, deep sand etc.) it will be less effective.

405 wants to talk about how bad Adrian is and he doesn’t deserve any hype, but he wants to hype up guys that can’t make it out of AVP qualifiers. Just saying, glad to see him back playing with a good partner. Are they world class? No, but they had a great week and were fun to watch.
Chile played awesome defense... blame the style all you want, the reality is none of these tempos were a surprise to the Grimalts. The two teams trained together for a few weeks last month.
If you play slow basic volleyball, you probably aren’t gonna be the the top teams. However, if you can get the block running around (Slick and Doherty looked like they were guarding Hot Sauce in an And 1 BB game) you could beat them on occasion.

I think Adrian is world class with the right partner, not sure about Rossi yet and definitely not the two of them together, but I don't see a huge chasm in class between Adrian and Nick Lucena for example, or Taylor Crabb (maybe they aren't world class either though). I think Adrian is probably somewhere between 15-25th in terms of defenders in the world, and he has passed so many of the US guys in the last 5 years or so.

Also this idea that Adrian is suddenly good, but wasn't before, is garbage. He was posting excellent results in majors several years ago. Is he in better shape, sure he looks fitter, but he has been a very good player for a while now
