Why would anyone think this is a good idea? Best 3 out of 5 in a 4 day tournament!? The low number of teams in 18 Open at AAUs make this doable and it won't be an issue. Back in the old USAV days when they played best of 5, teams played two matches per day except one extra match if you were in the gold bracket. I can't remember if the 3-match day was on day 3 as a Gold challenge match or if it was the championship match. There were literally 12 teams in 18 Open last year. Two pools of six, then an 8-team Championship bracket would be two matches per day. It was the championship match....and it was usually pretty rough.

First weekend of play for 18s in Southern California. Reigning champs SCVC currently 1-3 in pool play, not sure if they're missing some pieces?

On paper, TAV 18-Black looks scary good!!!! It will be interesting to see which teams can hang with them this season. NKYVC and 1st Alliance will be able to hang. It’ll be interesting to see who else kept most of their players. It seems that more kids chose to finish their senior year than VT would lead us to believe. Sure a handful went early but a good number chose not to enroll early.

Can’t put any stock into results from the first weekend in January. Just curious if everyone was there.

Be curious how NKYVC is handling the 3 setters on the roster. Kiana Dinn is new to the group and probably tinkering with line-ups and such.

Oh, now that should be good. 18 Open: 1st - TAV 18 Black 2nd - Skyline 18 Royal 3rd - Madfrog 18N Green/Summit 18 National Blue *Championship match TAV vs Skyline went to three. **Looks like DN18R got knocked out in first round of gold bracket play by Summit 17 Open: 1st - Skyline 17 Royal 2nd - MadFrog 17N Green 3rd - DN 17 Red/Excel 17 National White **Excel White is the club's 2nd team. Looks like they managed to knock off TAV 17 Black Jon in the quarterfinals

Watched TAV 18s play this weekend, WOW! They are going to be tough to beat this year considering the other teams who lost early commits are depleted.

I was shocked to see that Skyline took them to three. Did you watch that game? Anything notable? When I look at the roster, I just imagine TAV 18s blowing everyone out but I haven't seen them play yet this year.

As it is with this team every year, it's all about ball control. If they can pass well and run Favor, no one beats them. She's an absolute force of nature. If you can serve them hard and keep them pushing the pins out of system, not saying it will be easy by any stretch, but they are beatable in that scenario. When teams were able to score points on them this weekend was directly related to how hard that team served and the passing not being as sharp. If they get you out of system and you don't keep pressure on them and play safe, it's over for you because the ball is going to the middle quickly and coming back at you really hard and really fast.

Sounds more mental. Hopefully, they've all been putting in some mental strength training. We watched a set of the LSC finals against Dynasty, and they did a huge job blocking and serving tough that set. You could see the defeat on TAVs faces and that caused them to make multple errors in a row. We played in the afternoons at nationals so not sure what happened to them there. If they can build on this weekend and win the mental game, they definitely will be fun to watch this season. Favor is insane. I definitely say their attackers are definitely the most athletic team out there in 18s.

This is correct for qualifiers. Once you play on a specific team for a qualifier, you cannot play on any other team for qualifier season. I believe Madi Skinner always played up and after her 18's Nationals her junior year, she then played for the 17's at the end of the year. Have the rules changed? Previously you got locked onto a roster only once the team earns a bid at a qualifier. (You could not help multiple teams qualify.) No rules have changed. 18's players can do this AFTER the 18's season is complete. There are no qualifiers after the 18's season, so they aren't helping the 17's team get a bid. If there club was able to secure a 17's bid, then the young 18's player can jump down for Nationals.

I have to say I’m a little disappointed in you NTR folks. Last year y'all had your own thread because there was so much drama! This year: nothing! Surely there was some Texan craziness, right?

SCVA Championships aren't until done until June 9th this year. That's kind of late.

Just give it time. I'm certain that something newsworthy enough will happen to warrant its own thread. We just need to give the season some time to percolate a bit and let the pressure cooker do its job and something is bound to pop enough to warrant a thread in a few months. Otherwise it wouldn't be an NTR season...right?
