Talk about polar opposite approaches to the game in the England/Cuba semi. That should be very fun to watch. They played in pool play and it was one of the best matches of the weekend.

Talk about polar opposite approaches to the game in the England/Cuba semi. That should be very fun to watch. just wanted to point out that I took a look at stats for the England Rd. of 16 win over Treo, and the brother Joaquin hit like .650 in that match. What a performance. The brother Javier also hit about .600 in the 2nd and 3rd sets after hitting negative in the first. That Javier completely turned it around made all the difference, as Treo did not play poorly at all.

After Theo basically blocked England into oblivion in game 1, the Bellos adjusted and started hitting more shots, going for less terminal swings, etc. They didn't abandon their uber-angle, straight down swings, but they took fewer of them and did a nice job covering the balls Theo did block. But that should be when a defender starts to feast. But Trevor is not a good defender and he couldn't make any plays. And when Trevor did get digs, he didn't convert them.

Don’t play their 2nd group game, get by far the weakest group winner as a ‘reward’ but still were not able to capitalize on it. I disagree. The Bellos are on the rise and their Euro results last year started to implicate just how good they are becoming. Look at the seeding of the winners as a start point. Aus seed 17, George and Andre 4, Cappogrosso 22, Herra Gavira 11, Scachter Dearing 13. The Bellos were seed 7. Only one team with a high initial position. Their last season results are stacking up. Don’t get me wrong, they play a hell of a tournament and clearly must be very hard workers to get to this level despite their height limitations. I have always been a fan of undersized teams that outplay much taller teams based on their better volleyball fundamentals, tactics and athleticism so I really like this team! But objectively speaking every team on tour would probably still consider getting the Bellos in a Rd. 16 match a pretty good draw. Obviously this may change soon if they show consistent performances like this week.

The reality is since their breakthrough tournament in Vienna at the Europeans they haven’t finished out if the top five (one 5th/4th/3rd/1 tbd) in the last four events at challenger level. As excited as teams maybe on theoretical paper of drawing them the reality is prob better to get a more erratic team than them right now.

Bello's take it 15-13. USA #2 losing to England is a bad look. Lol not at all. These boys grew up competing against Sweden and Norway in NEZVA and are seriously hard workers. Their results of late have seen off some serious opposition. I'm keeping an eye on them but I don't consider them a scary team. I would be surprised if they win gold in Recife. Cuba is a good match up, though.

Does anyone know how Bello is actually supposed to be pronounced ? Yes. I asked Barbara the mum. Bello is a Spanish surname (I don’t know any English born bellows yet) but in the UK everyone pronounces it Bello. But in Spain where they are born and grew til they were ten it was Beyyo. Barbara said However they don’t mind how you say it because they hear it both ways. But during UK commentary esp for the commonweath games where they won bronze you would hear Bello not Beyyo. Hope this clears it up. I would as British say Bello. Simon does too. Travis is using the Spanish version as did Eric today I think. a definitive answer would be. They are British and it’s pronounced using L not Y. Eveyone knows them as that in the UK and that’s where they live and breathe beach volleyball. Of course in Spain it’s different but their fan base is UK and they are The BeLLos. The Bellodrome was a thing at the commonwealth games hosted in the Uk.

I have followed the Bello’s since they came to Hermosa to train a few years back (they’re friends with Tim Brewster and a few other regulars) and I can say I am not surprised by what they are achieving. Humble and incredibly hard workers, they make up for their small size with an impecable technique, great physicality (Joaquin’s vertical is over 3 feet) and a tactical knowledge of the game that surpasses that of many more experienced players. As a short player myself, their story is both fascinating and inspiring and that’s what our sport needs… I will be cheering for them to make it to the final today

the annoucer didn't say bell-low. Nor did he say Bay-yo. He split the difference and said Bell-lee-oh... perhaps that might be how you would pronounce that in Italian, not sure, but the announcer pronounced it neither as it would be pronounced in England, or Spain. He made up a middle option.

Evans and Budinger serving slow topspin serves at Evandro. Very stupid strategy...

Evans and Budinger serving slow topspin serves at Evandro. Very stupid strategy... The type of serve maybe, and certainly switching to Arthur after the game was lost was dumb, but I thought they may have been on to something trying to wear him down. If he can maintain the level of play from this first game throughout, its over anyway, but I would have kept the serves on him in Game 1 at least, since they already gave it away by serving him early.

They switched to float serving Arthur, immediately get points Evandro is looking pretty gassed in this second game. Already contributed to multiple points for the US with tired looking plays Not so much in the 3rd

Evans and Budinger serving slow topspin serves at Evandro. Very stupid strategy... as I've said a boring amount of times, there is no more useless serve than a slow topspin (Captain America). Underhand is more effective.
