Other true GOAT’s ncaa: Dan Gable: Dan Gable took the helm at Iowa in 1976 and propelled the Hawkeyes to the peak of the sport for good. Before that season, there was no question who the dominant force in wrestling was. Oklahoma State had won 26 of the first 48 titles, and only Oklahoma and Iowa State had captured more than one. In the next 20 years, under Gable, Iowa would win 15 titles, and the Hawkeyes wouldn’t slow down after he left, capturing three more from 1998-2000, and another trio from 2008-2010. Dick Gould- “Over 38 years coaching Stanford, Dick Gould led his team to a 776-148 record, for a winning percentage of .840. For 35 years, every four-year member of Stanford’s tennis team earned at least one NCAA team championship ring. Gould produced 50 All-Americans during his tenure at Stanford, including John McEnroe, Gene Mayer, Alex Mayer, Roscoe Tanner, and Tim Mayotte.” Division I coach has won more titles with one team than Anson Dorrance. It started when his Tar Heels won the very first Division I women’s soccer championship in 1982. From that year until 2012 — a period of 31 years — UNC would win 21 championships, and never go more than two years without a title. So yes, that meant if you were a women’s soccer player at North Carolina at any point between 1982 and 2012, and you played for four years, you were “guaranteed” at the very least one national championship. Not a bad deal.

Washington had a sellout because they lowered their prices to $10/ticket from $50/ticket to have a sellout. Why don't they do that every game? They specifically chose to do it for Nebraska because they were aware of the draw. Also, if you've ever had a seat in the nose-bleed section at HecEd you'd realize that $10 might not be such a bargain. Six of the nine road matches Nebraska has played this season were to attendance record crowds for the opposing team.

I would say he is the GOAT of recruiting but many coaches would have more titles if given the same resources and recruits he has been given. If Nebraska can’t win it all this year these last 4 or 5 classes have definitely underperformed. Now look, I understand Cook isn’t the most liked amongst non Husker fans and he doesn’t need people like me defending him. HOWEVER, this is a very bad take imo so I will be commenting lol. To say ’many’ coaches would have more titles is crazy. First, a part of coaching is recruiting lol. Second, the resources he has is in large part of the success he’s been able to maintain. Third, do you know how hard it is to win a NC??? 2015 & 2017 NC, 5 set runner ups to teams favored in the NC in 2018 and 2021. And then another runner up finish in 2023 with 0 seniors. That’s incredibly successful. Do I think he’s the GOAT? No, but he still has a chance to get there. Ok rant over lol.

John Cook has shaped the sport SO much and does deserve his flowers!
Any word of when he may retire? I’d assume after Harper and Bergen’s class?

No one is saying he doesn't deserve recognition for what he's done for the sport. He's been amazing at growing the sport and getting people excited to attend college volleyball matches. However, that doesn't necessarily mean he's the greatest of all-time. I guess the best way to start is what is the criteria for GOAT status? NCAA Championships, Conference Championships, number of All-Americans, number of All-Americans who were NOT top recruits, winning percentage... all fair things to consider, among others.

You always have this response, and it's always as asinine as it was the first time. Sure, seven national titles and 1330 wins don't mean much. Oh, okay. Not to mention that unlike Cook and some of the other possible contenders, Rose built Penn State himself rather than inheriting a strong program. I like how you don't bother to actually list counterarguments or reasons to dispute the claim. I suspect it's because you don't have good arguments. I know that you’ve never been in either of their gyms. Please elucidate those of us who haven't had an opportunity to be in each gym.

As of today, R.O.S.E. is clearly the G.O.A.T. But Cook's not done yet.

Al Scates is the actual vb GOAT: coaching, winning, and coaches in his tree! If John C was a goat wisconsin should have been better, as institution, Stanfords the GOAT, no matter who coaches there they win Championships! Cook has been a good fir for Nebraska: right man right time: considering he is Southern Cal boy who started out with dreams of being college coach in California and now a rancher in Nebraska its a good story. But he’s not the goat! Thanks, I wasn't familiar with Al Scates since I don't follow NCAA men's volleyball. He would definitely be the NCAA Men's volleyball GOAT.

Other than that, I don't recall anything close to a statement about his retirement.

But there has been no word on his retirement since then, and while I could see him hanging it up if he wins a championship in the next year or two, I could also see him trying to tie Russ Rose, and being here several more years. He seems like he's having so much more fun now.
