Although only 5'10, Herring has amazing jumping ability. Not all great outside hitters are over 6'0. Willoughby was probably at best 5'10.5, Florida's Cruz was 5'11 and Jen Saleamua was only 5'11 as well...and of course the amazing Cal OH Pressy at 5'9. Hawaii has had success with small OH's...Robins 5'8 (but man could she jump)...Lovelace at 5'9...but again...that's when little people ruled!!! Tee Williams was only 5'11. She was POY 2 times. Also Misty May one of my all-time favorites, although setter, she was her teams most effective player- she was only 5'9." 6'4"-6'5" are not rare, but one who is that tall with agility and athleticism is. Pavan is one of them. Most of the others are too stiff, too slow or lack athleticism. Kanani Herring, who touches well over 10', may be a re-emergance of Tee Williams. She made 1st team all-tournament team at the Durango Classic in Las Vegas earlier this month. Hewitt, another UH recruit MB, made it too. I don't think the highly regarded Tarah Murrey made it. Maybe she didn't participate, but she was listed on her school's roster.

We need a very good transfer middle. That's probably the only position that'll have big question marks about? Outsides will be locked when Kanani will contribute next season. I say: OH1: Jamie Houston OH2: Kanani Herring OH3: Hittle/Ferrell OPP: Aneli/Keefe MB1: Kaufman MB2: Simmons MB3: Hewitt Libero: Kaahiue DS: Lee Setters: Brandt/Mafua *We will probably get a transfer or Jupiter. ? Don't forget Nickie Thomas! She will probably be the MB1. Yeah, I am so ready for Nickie Thomas to play full-time already! Let's hope she'll be injury-free for a long, long, looooong time.

Come to think of it, Lily Kahanamoku, at 6'2", was the tallest OH the Wahine ever had. The others were in the range of 5'8 to 5'11". Having seen Kanani play in her junior year, she is the next Wahine star. She gave a solid performance at the Durango classic 3 weeks ago.

I prefer Hittle on the rightside with Otineru the back up as well as fourth option on the left after Houston, Herring, and Ferrell.
I agree on bringing a power outside transfer. I know we've had our fair share of middle and setter transfers that made immediate impact. Who was the last outside that really made contributed right away?

My starting lineup for 2008 would be Jamie Lashauna Houston and Jessica Keefe at outside hitter, Rachel Nicole Thomas and Amber Kaufman in the middle, Stephanie Carroll Brandt at setter, and Tara Hittle opposite with Jayme Lee as the libero. First off the bench would be Aneli as a defensive specialist.

Jamie Houston was the last true freshman to make an immediate contribution on the outside and Sarah Mason was the last transfer who contributed right away on the left outside spot.

Thanks O.n.B.
How could I have forgotten Sarah Mason? She was a big time player for us. Yeah, we need a transfer like Sarah Mason!

I somewhat agree. Willoughby I think was really around 5'11.2" or whatever. And Mussie from Washington is only 5'9" and she was very instumental in helping UW sweep USC....so maybe you're right. Lets just hope that she's as good as the press makes her to be. No pressure or anything. Even though she doesn't live up to her #5 recruit, Shoji has done great, great things with recruits. Willoughby wasn't even top 5 in her class (I believe), neither was Kahumoku. I just look at those who have transfered (Bown/Prince) - relatively unknown before Hawaii - and look what they meant to the program after they left. Willoughby wasn't a top recruit because no one really knew about her. Only LBSU, Hawaii and Nebraska. Thats about it. Other than that she really didn't get much attention because she played for a relatively small school and not a big name club team. Shoji has only a piece of the pie when it comes to recruits leaving the program successful. It depends on the talent of the player. ie; Hittle...ah, big time hype about her but to me she hasn't lived up to that hype and transfers like Karin Lunquvits and Tanja Nikolic really didn't give Hawaii that big of a boost. IMHO it's about time for Shoji to retire. We need a new and fresher take on the game. I don't know who will take over but we need someone with a heck of a lot of experience and a winning record of course. Coaches can only mold and shape thier players so much. Its all up to the player how well they'll progress. But lets all hope Herring has that talent that would push her to greatness. But we can only ask her to play her best and have fun. But also to bring us home a national championshio.

I don't know that younger and fresher is necessarily better. All the top programs in the nation seem to have 'mature', more experienced, coaches at the helm, eg. Nebraska, UCLA, Stanford, USC, Washington, Penn State, Florida, and Minnesota.

Hittle didn't have "big time hype". She was in the lower half of Fab 50 if I recall, nothing near top 5.
