I'm considering a few changes with the "Off the Net" board. Please take a moment and express your thoughts by voting or leaving a comment.
Typically, the "Off the Net" board has been a free-for-all of discussions and topics. But that has been abused so much that I honestly have stopped moderating it to keep what limited time I have on the volleyball-side of things.
The "Off the Net" board was established to try to keep content on the volleyball forums related to volleyball, by giving a place to discuss those other interesting topics with your friends in this community.
While it's obvious you can be pretty creative with conversation (quite quickly) here on the volleyball boards, most discussion is volleyball-centric.
Please express your thoughts here so that I can make a decision that best benefits the community.
Do I bother keeping the board? Do I increase moderation and make it more "friendly?" Do I enforce stricter posting rules to help sort through the garbage?

I marked "Other" because I used to visit frequently when it was fun, light-hearted fluffy threads. When it became so bizarre and required one to search through the content, I stopped visiting so much.

Some usage statistics:
82% of users to Volley Talk stay on the women's board. 16% of users visit the men's board 1.6% of users visit the off the net board

It doesn't need much moderation. It needs a few posters to stop being such jackasses. 50 threads about the same topic is just spamming. No one's asking them to stop posting, just to have the common courtesy to not keep creating new threads for topics already opened.
I don't think the moderators should have to moderate an open-forum about topics not even related to the site's subject. But it's up to the participating posters to keep the site readable.
It's probably too late. I doubt anyone really cares anymore.

I say shut it down. A couple individuals corrupt every post with something totally unrelated. Even a post commenting on a movie or tv show gets hyjacked by the same jack-offs.

I say just ban ANY political talk... that would probably be a great start - and if people can't abide by that rule, then ban those individual people. (Although banning individual people FIRST might stop all the political nonsense anyway...)

I agree with the initiator of the "Spammers Need to be Banned" thread. I believe the Off the Net board complements the volleyball boards. If there were no OTN board, spammer-types might well interject their messages into the volleyball threads, thereby making them much less fun to read and/or require far more attention from the moderators.

Suggestion: Just create another board for political discussion. Remember, there used to be separate boards for movies, books (I think,) etc. These were consolidated into one board for convenience, I guess.
I agree that a couple of posters have hijacked this board and taken all (or most) of the fun out of it. If they want to ruin the poltical board, then everyone else can just avoid it, and these few obnoxious posters can have it to themselves.
If they begin to inject politics into the new, "politics free" Off The Net Board, then thay can be warned, then banned.

I voted "other" so here is my explanation:
I used to really like this section, and found some great books, movies, and camera advice there.
I bet the % used to be a lot higher.

I only checked out the Off the Net board a handfull of times - mostly when a thread I was following was moved. Probably a year or more since I've been there. I'm here for volleyball so you can do whatever you want with it - doesn't affect me.

I went from visiting that side of the board from frequently to occasionally. I no longer care to as much now due to certain posters. Once I see certain posters' name either as the author of a thread or those certain posters' name being the latest poster on a thread, I now pass on viewing its contents. And this is regardless of who originally started the thread even though at the start I did have interest at first before the "hijack" by these certain individuals.
Not sure what you should do about that side of the board, Odin, but, I just wanted to state the reason on why it truly lost its luster there that it once had for me.

Divide and conquerer Start a new site, just News and Politics Call it OFF THE COURT...or? Keep the OFF THE NET for lighter topics , same as before, without all the politics.

I vote for the additional politics board. Seeing some of the ridiculous opinions posted there helps me understand which posters don't have the minimal critical thinking skills to form a rational opinion about anything and therefore I can give their volleyball opinions less weight.
