Just got back from a volleyball tournament and can't believe that I'm the one to break this on Volleytalk. I heard it from a USAV person. Might have just happened today.

Things have been rumored to be heading this way for quite awhile. It took awhile to work out the details with Minnesota and with USAV.

in the middle of the quadrennial? Really? Sigh.......
If the USWNT doesn't get it together in London, there are gonna be a lot of angry VT posters pointing to this thread (myself included)

Just posted on another thread that inability to get along with the USAV Staff might have been a factor in Hugh's decision.

I'm sorry but that's just not right. To leave these women who have totally bought into Hugh's system high and dry half way through the quad and the summer of olympic qualification is just wrong.

Hell hath no fury like a VolleyTalker scorned.....I just checked the USAV website to see if perhaps they had issued a statement (I didn't expect they would). However, the press release regarding his acceptance of the Minnesota position says "McCutcheon will continue to fulfill his current obligations with USA Volleyball and join the Gophers as their full-time head coach at a mutually agreed upon date in the future." Did the press release initially specify 2012 and they changed it or did it always read that way?

Here is what happened (IMO) Hugh looked at Tabi leaving and the fact that Minnesota could fall off the national map in 18 months and decided to leave now so that he could get a jump on recruiting. As many coaches have said, it is much tougher to get a program to that top 10 level than it is to keep it there once you have a pipeline in place. Since Hugh is new to the women's recruiting landscape, it will be crucial for him to get a good start on recruits.

Just posted on another thread that inability to get along with the USAV Staff might have been a factor in Hugh's decision. Is it possible the USAV got fed up with Hugh’s waffling and questioned his commitment to the NT over the next 18 months? One might ask whether Hugh would be 100% committed to the NT when he has to be thinking about recruits for Minnesota. You can't be thinking about two jobs at the same time. Just my speculation.

disgusted if this is true. Hugh showing his true character. You can't use the national team and throw them away when opportunity comes a knocking.

Disgusted?
Let me preface this by stating that my opinion has nothing to do with USA volleyball:
Hugh McCutcheon may be one of the finest human beings I have come across. He cares about his family, his friends, and his career. it is my opinion that Hugh wanted to be with his family and his newborn son rather than travel the world and not be there for the first two years of that little boy's life. Have any of you considered that? I find it crude and obscene that anybody would denounce Hugh for leaving the WNT for a job that will allow him to raise his son and be with his family.
Why not just wish him luck and applaud the man for wanting to be with his family?
