Honestly, I didn't see anything last year that would lead me to think that she would be a 'go to' OH, but I really am hoping that she is able to take on that role. Looking forward to seeing Nikki play this season, and how she responds to the college game. Tai improved a lot over the spring, made the A2 team. I hope you're right Wiz!...knowing she made the A2 team and is training with them gives me hope. And, most local girls pride themselves on being a Wahine and work hard to improving. They grow up watching the Wahine and they understand the expectations of becoming outstanding vball players. I really hope she can be another "bail-out" hitter that Hawaii needs.

What has separated the elite ones (Willoughby, Williams, Danielson, Hartong) is their ability to hit for a high percentage especially when matches get tight. The great ones had it, but for her that is still kind of a question mark. Her hitting percentage was pretty lackluster, although she was playing out of position. I think only being inserted in crunch time will tell. It wasn't really needed last year with Croson, I am pretty sure it will be needed this year.

I've been on here a day and I already skip past everything it posts. HV1 you've just rambled on for three posts in a row. We all get it that you think Hawaii is going to be better than LBSU, enough already.

Nahhh....I doubt Hawaii is gonna lose to LBSU EVER this season! LBSU does not even have a setter as of now......and Hawaii is well rounded and has depth in every position....even with Croson gone they are loaded with offensive weapons...they will probably lose to Texas but of course they were the Champions last season.....but Hawaii has nothing to lose so it doesn't really matter....they were note expected to win....Texas got much more to worry about because they won last season and they want to keep it going and be champions again! If Hawaii fights hard enough they may have a chance to beat Texas.

If you look at RichKern there are a few more 2013 recruits. Also Janisa Johnson really is gone, she was a senior in the 2012 season. Also Ajanaku transferred to Georgia State.

My concern with Croson not returning is having that other "big game" player to put down the ball. She may not have had good hitting percentages, but with her 10+ hitting errors, she also brought in 20+ kills at least. I'm worried that Olevau/Kastl may not be savy as Croson was in getting kills; therefore they will bring more errors than kills. With the likes of Texas/Penn St/Stanford who can average 6'2 in the front row, Hawaii will need players who can put the ball down should Hawaii not pass well.
What is going to happen to Croson's scholarship? Will Shoji look for an impact player who's looking to transfer, and international recruit, give it to a walk-on, or save it for next years recruiting class?

Even with all her errors, Croson was more consistent than Kastl. And Croson did everything else better too, except blocking. Olevao could still end up being good. She just needs to hit above .220 and get 3 1/2 kills per set to be effective. Scholarship could go to a walk-on if there are no impact transfers coming, probably Lelepali depending on how big her role will be. When Shoji had an extra scholarship in 2004, he gave it to his libero, Ashley Watanabe.

I wonder if it is too early to start a Hawaii-Texas thread. I got bored and was watching the 2012 title match again. Then I watched some old Hawaii matches. Putting two and two together I have some thoughts on the matchup that I am saving for that thread.

Evaluating the posts of Hawaii chances of beating Texas seems to be very, very, very slim. That was about the same situation when Hawaii went to Austin in 2005(?) and beat them 3-1. Never say never.
