There were a lot of good things happening and still lots to work on, but it's nice to see that they don't need to work on everything haha. Anyway, I was really impressed with E. Shoji. He was extremely solid passing, especially tonight and his defense is solid. I'm hoping he fully takes over from Lambourne. Speaking of passing, I think this team will be pretty good here, Ciarelli, Anderson, and especially Lotman were all solid and can still improve. So here's to hoping that this will be a much better passing team than last quad. Setting is still a bit shaky but I definitely think Shoji is capable, he certainly performed better than Thornton who I just don't think will emerge. Then we have to see how Caldwell and Ammerman do as well. The opposite is going to be interesting, I think Clark and Troy were both about even offensively, but Clark showed better serving (which looks like a major strength for this team). They're both fast and smaller, but that might work. I think Clark as a lefty provides nice variety. This is the spot where I could see Menzel though if they wanted to go for a big hammer. I'm excited to see what happens this summer! Interesting idea moving Menzel to opposite. He could really do some damage from that side. Haven't followed Jeff's career for a long time but I am impressed by him. Anyone else know more about him and if he has played opposite before?

I've just heard that he's training both opposite and outside, but we seem to have a lot of outsides and less variety from the opposite spot. Clark and Troy both play fast but without the thunder of a hitter like Stanley so having Menzel there could be more useful. I'm not aware of his passing capabilities.

Sorry but I disagree. I can't picture Jeff Menzel playing opposite on the NT. I know he had experience on the right side, but that was a long time ago. Besides, I think Jeff is not tall enough for the position. He's got the tools but not the physical ones. I prefer he keeps on playing as OH. He may not be the best passer but we need somebody with his athleticism to play on the left side too.

I've heard/read that hes training in both OH and OPP, but yes i strongly agree with you that we need the 2nd OH who can pass, right now we have Lotman but what if hes not on when subbing for the other OH? How about Anderson when he has a bad match? Menzel is the guy imo to do the damages on the left side. He has he abilities to go over the shorter blocker/setter on te left; but on the right of our net is a taller OH from the opposition team, Menzel is not ready for that position yet experiences wise, this is NT who competes at highest level, not college days where we can try him out for a season. Troy/Clark are doing fine so far with the Opp spot. They will improve more as the time goes on. The most important thing is consistency is PASSING! If we put Loyd Ball in the setting position but passing is broken down then whats the point?? I was really disappointed to see how the US opened up the 2nd match at home in the first set. Garrett couldnt even pass the floating serves from Crer. Then Lotman subbed in, the team wasnt young anymore except we now have E.Shoji in the passing position along with Anderson/Lotman. I hope to see Brad Lawson and Menzel in the 2nd OH spot against France this coming weekend.

I'd say he's pretty good and from an international perspective, he's not that tall for an OP. He's definitely physical enough, and from a measurement perspective, he attacks about 4" higher and blocks well over 12" higher. This all is from the FIVB roster. I've never seen them live and can only comment based on what I've seen on TV, but does Clark really touch the same as Menzel? I find that incredibly hard to believe.

Well, I find it hard to believe too. Carson Clark jumps very high and has one of the best sliding jump that I've ever seen when he comes from behind the line but I think Jeff Menzel jumps higher than him. Menzel's vertical jump is one of the most impressive or maybe the most impressive compared to all players who are competing in the World League currently.

Great job 2nd match by USA! But in 2 first sets, things were pretty bleak....especially in 2nd Argentina had the lead by seven pts! So what went wrong? 1st-Thornton and Garret had an awful night 2nd-reception, serving and passing below average. When Kawika (the turning point!) Lotman (oh yes, i have to say, nice game) and Clark (only because of his serving, spikes were not consistent) got in, USA change the all thing. But, we should wait for next weekend and see if team can do the same against France. They are more aggressive in serving. Luckily we have a little great receiver: Erik Shoji. About Menzel, i followed some matches in Italian League, and he stayed most of the time in bench, and when called...no explosion. Maybe in Belgium he could show his real capabilities. And we need to have real good Opposites, Stanley is still missing. Troy has a great potential but also need to spike with "smart". For me there is a major absence: Holt. Nowadays, serving become the "difference among equals", an this guy showed a real power house in Italian Finals. By the way, 2nd match against Argentina 10-1 in aces!!!

Myakhaylov actually is on Russia roster for WL. I think he is resting because of a long and exhausting season. Maybe against Italy, Serbia or Cuba he will be on.

I'd start: S - Shoji OH - Anderson and Ciarelli (with Lotman coming in if necessary) OPP - Clark (then maybe put Troy in later, like the inverse of what they did last weekend) MB - Smith and Holt L - Shoji Then on night two I'd like to see them give Muagututia another shot and maybe give Holmes a chance to play.

Oh, no!. Garrett Muagututia again. Am I the only one who thinks this guy is not worthy of NT?. We need crafty players and Garrett does not fit in that perspective, IMO. Also, I hope Speraw does not start Brian Thornton this time around. His abilities to set the ball is so inaccurate. Actually I'm surprised he is on the roster after such a disappointing performances in the previous matches.

I'm sure Kyle Caldwell and Ryan Ammerman will also get their looks at setter. They may just not be in playing shape right now.

There is another curious detail. Matt Rawson has been cut from the roster without even have the chance to go onto the court (not even as a sub). I think it's a bit wierd. My guess is that Ammerman or Caldwell will be on show against Poland or Brazil just because the fact that they are taller than Thornton and Shoji can help a lot in block against stronger teams like those two.
