The best show on TV, Better Call Saul, returned over the weekend with a pair of great episodes in its fifth and penultimate season. I have it on the DVR to watch. Looking forward to it. Also just finished Narcos: Mexico Season 2 on Netflix. Very good series.

I caught up on Succession. The second season finale was very good. It's definitely a good show, but I think it's a little overrated. Definitely not the best show on TV (Better Call Saul is miles better), nor the best HBO show since The Sopranos (the best seasons of The Wire, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Veep, Silicon Valley and Game of Thrones are better, and I probably forgot something). Its best episodes (S01E06, S02E06, S02E10) are fantastic, but it doesn't have the consistent greatness that the aforementioned shows (and others) did when they were really on top of their game. Still, I look forward to its third season.

When The Affair is good, it's very very good. When it's not so good, it's still decent. I've seen seasons 1-3. I have yet to see seasons 4-5. The only thing you shouldn't do is watch it with your kids or parents. Lots of sex scenes. But the way it handles the multiple POVs is fantastic.

Firefly's sad history of being $#%!ed by their network started with the very first episode. Joss wrote a really fine story that explained the backstory and introduced all the characters -- and then the network said, "No, we want more action." The writers had two days to write a new first episode. The network finally showed the originally intended pilot episode ... a couple of days after they had announced they were cancelling the series. it's like they took that pilot and they ran it through with a giant spear or something.

OK, took me a moment.

I watched the first several episodes of Narcos, and I've gotten bored with it. Don't get me wrong. It's a well-made show. But it's just missing something. I think the biggest issue for me is the heavy, heavy reliance on narration. The judicious use of a narrator isn't necessarily a bad thing (many of my favorite movies--The Shawshank Redemption, LA Confidential, Goodfellas, Casino, A Bronx Tale, etc.--use a narrator), but it's just too much.
Speaking of shows with a narrator, I started catching up on Black-ish, as I was about midway through season 4 when I got sidetracked. The good news is that it's still hilarious into season 5 (it's currently in its sixth season). The only issue I have is that it attempted to do a "serious" multi-episode arc with Dre and Bow having marital issues. But I just didn't buy it because it seemed like they abruptly started having issues overnight (in one episode, they seemed completely fine, and in the next, they suddenly needed counseling) without a major inciting incident like an affair. I get that couples can grow apart over 20 years, but it doesn't happen that quickly, so if they wanted to do it, they should have set it up properly over an entire season. Also, the thing that saved their marriage felt like a deus ex machina. It was annoying because the actual dialogue and acting were good, but the setup and resolution were botched.

Were you watching Narcos or Narcos:Mexico? I wonder if they use narration more than normal to supplement the shows since they have a lot of Spanish with subtitles so maybe filling in some blanks that might have been missed?

I was watching Narcos, the one about Pablo Escobar. This article does a good job elaborating on the issues that I and the author had with the narration.

Safe (Netflix) (1 season, 8 episodes): Mediocre overall but pretty good by today's low standards. Pretty involved murder mystery plot, a few developed characters, many failed attempts at being stylish. Weirdest part to me was everyone's cell phone rang like an old landline. Is that a British thing? Very distracting.

Catching up on the many seasons of Survivor that I missed. Season 24 One World right now. Almost finished with the season, and I have to say I never really hated any contestant more than Colton and Alicis. They're just so vicious towards Christina...and Alicia is a Special Ed teacher. Like Jonah said, its bad enough Christina knows she is going home, but the two just had to twist the knife even more. So glad Colton was removed for appendicitis...karma!

Curb Your Enthusiasm wrapped up its 10th season last night. The finale was pretty good, though not as good as, say, the season 4 or season 7 finales. It was a strong season overall, and the 8th episode in particular was one of the best episodes in the history of the show. In it, Jon Hamm is shadowing Larry for an upcoming role. At first, he's as embarrassed by Larry as anyone else, but he slowly transforms into Larry David 2.0 by the end. Incredible episode of television.

Binged all 24 episodes of Darling in the FranXX on Hulu last night and went to work on 45min of sleep . Despite it's controversial ending (for some) I really enjoyed it!

If yall can't tell I am on an anime binge during these trying times. Hmmmmm what to watch next?? Anyone have any animes for me to consider?? Oh I forgot to mention I also watched all 7 volumes of RWBY within the last 2 weeks! First 6 seasons are free on Prime and YouTube, season 7 is on Roosterteeth.com free with ads (unless you sub).
