But that's before injury for asu. I watched them cream colorado state. They would have won the pac12 I think they would have been top 3 and in the running for #1, but a blanket #1, then no. #1, no, but I am really bummed by the loss of Gardner. Man was she important for that team.

Go back and read my original post. I didn't say DeHoog was as good as Inky or Gardner. What I suggested was losing players like DeHoog and Gardner mid-season has the potential to be a bigger challenge for a coaching staff than knowing before the season begins that you won't have a key player. And let's not pooh-pooh the play of DeHoog. vs.Oregon she had 9 kills and hit .818 vs. OSU she had 6 kills and hit .400 vs. ASU 4 kills and hit .375 at USC 5 kills hitting .417 at UCLA she had 8 kills and hit .500. Comparing the loss of Gardner vs. DeHoog is laughable. Gardner's loss brought ASU from the near-top of the PAC12 conference to probably not playing in the tourney. DeHoog just slowed the Huskies down from 70 MPH to 68!

I think Stanford will lead the Pac next year. I wonder what USC will look like? They're only losing 2 players, but one of those players is Bricio and the other is Ogoms. I think they might struggle.

The big question is how their best hitter will do in the fast tempo offense next year. I don't know much about Lanier, so anyone have any insight?

OK , I'm looking at the PAC-12 Handbook right now.
1) All-PAC team: voted on by coaches. Each coach lists 20 players in order. Points for each vote are 20, 19, 18, etc. The 18 players with the highest number of points are elected. [Note, it used to be 14, but this was changed to 18 starting in 2014.]
2) All-freshman team: works the same way except coaches only pick seven players each, and only seven players are selected to the team.
3) POY: the top vote-getter in the All-PAC voting.
4) FOY: the top vote-getter in the All-freshman voting.
5) COY, SOY, LOY -- coaches vote on these separately. They get two votes for each. First place votes get 3 points, second place votes get 1 point.

Now it makes sense why the makeup of the team is not necessarily balanced among positions.

Julye will be on the all-freshman team, perhaps. Depends if the coaches go by accumulated stats (which would favor a player who started all season long) or by "eye test". Not very many other freshmen could have gotten significant impact playing time with Washington this year. Hodson, Vander Weide -- I'm not sure anybody else.

I don't see how it is justified to pick four Stanford players when they came in third in the conference, but USC and Washington only get three players each. I would put Wade in there, possibly in place of Howard.

Sure, Stanford may have been better with Inky. But didn't Dunning know before the start of the season that Inky would not be playing all season? Wasn't he able to plan for that? Isn't it just as challenging (or more so) for a team like ASU to lose Gardner or UW to lose DeHoog mid-season when lineups and rotations are already set? Stanford doesn't have a copyright on injuries to key players. Yeah, Dunning went right out and recruited a replacement for Inky ... Dunning is a genius and miracle worker!! Sad thing is, he had one. Megan McGehee, a fine middle blocker (she was, I believe, the 10th rated prospect her year) and a fine slide hitter that Stanford sorely needed, quit the team in the off season. You never really get the story in these cases, but she was no doubt frustrated trying to break into the lineup with Inky, Wopat and then Lutz ahead of her- she was used almost exclusively as a serving specialist last year.

For me, I don't think the difference between 4 and 3 members is enough to squeeze out Howard in favor of Abercrombie or Wade just to "balance it out." Some of those players might end up breaking through at the cost of someone like Kyra Holt or one of the three liberos (a position that fares poorly in this kind of voting). At the very least I'd expect Washington's depth to show through in the honorable mention class if they end up short on the first team. Also, I do think Julye has a shot at first team freshman. It just sort of depends on what the voter feel is.

It really depends how much of an out card Lanier can be. Of course, she won't be as good as Bricio initially, but if she can at least be a poor man's Bricio, then I think USC can be top 3. My only question is about Lanier's passing ... Will she be ok out of the gate? We all know Ford is a liability as a passer. Two bad LS passers spell trouble for the Women.
