Despite the Lemerand Center being smaller than the Santa Fe gym, it's a better decision to play on campus. The atmosphere will be much better and it is more centrally located. But it will be tight, presumably with the band and cheerleaders having to be squeezed in as well.
I'm really excited for the season even with the Detering transfer. The Gators look to have really shored up the back row, which has been the weak spot.

I'm so sad that I'm moving to St. Louis after being in Gainesville for 7 years. This is going to be an exciting year for Gator volleyball and I can't wait to follow along from a distance to see how everything shakes out! Who knows... if they get to the final 4, I may be making a trip to Ohio for the tournament!

Disappointed that Texas and Florida won't play this season. Perhaps next season when Florida hosts the VERT Challenge.

I think the Detering transfer may be a blessing in disguise. Sometimes I think certain overcrowded positions have caused some discontent. Monserez and Huskey should have it covered. Definitely agree that Lemerand is the better option.

Disappointed that Texas and Florida won't play this season. Perhaps next season when Florida hosts the VERT Challenge. I can guarantee you that Florida will choose to play Texas when they host the VERT. Doubt that the committee allows these teams to go a year without playing though, especially after last year's drama.

Well... Dagostino is DEF out... Orourke is likely to be replaced... talk of Recek not coming back also.... Dagostino has graduated. O'Rourke has graduated. Recek has graduated. Mallette and Antwi have also graduated. That is a lot of rebuilding for the Gators. They also lost Detering to transfer; she will now reside in Happy Valley with the Nittany Lions. Mary Wise will have nine returning players from the '15 season, along with nine recruits (they signed six in 2015 and have two walk ons, as well as Michigan transfer Caroline Knop).

My prediction: OH1- Snyder OH2- Joseph (Mia will come in occasionally for relief. Greer will potentially redshirt) MB1- Alhassan MB2- King (I think Kramer redshirts, Kellum comes in for relief) S- Detering will start but I wouldn't be surprised if mid season Huskey takes over L- Gregory Opp- Holston Detering is transferring to Penn State :/ So that leaves Huskey and Monserez.

I bought my season pass the other day, so I'm guaranteed a spot in the sardine can. It should be fun, though, in a more intimate setting. My guess it it will be similar to Tully in Tallahassee. I walked by the O'Connell Center on the way to the ticket office — total makeover inside and out. It was odd to see the concrete stairs still standing, but not much else around them.

The "Sardine Can", actually known as the Lemerand Athletic Center, will seat 700 and will be an intimate setting for the Gators home matches in 2016. They will be back in the O-Dome in 2017 where they will open with the VERT Challenge in year 3, hosting Nebraska, Texas and Oregon. Since they play two of the three other schools, it seems as though they will take on Nebraska and Texas to kick-off the 2017 campaign. Until then, based on what the Gators displayed in their opening weekend against Nebraska and Oregon, the Florida faithful should have a fun time rooting on the Orange and Blue in both the loud and intimate environment on campus, as well as rooting the Gators on when they are on the road. Here's to believing that they could play deep into December.

Starters after Week 1 were a little different than expected:
S - Allie Monserez - 5'9 - RS Sophomore MB1 - Rhamat Alhassan - 6'4 - Junior MB2 - Taelor Kellum - 6'2 - Sophomore L - Caroline Knop - 5'8 - Junior RS - Alex Holston - 6'1 - Senior OH1 - Carli Snyder - 6'0 - Junior OH2 - Shainah Joseph - 6'1 - RS Junior
For all the concerns about Florida's youth, this is actually a pretty veteran lineup. Alhassan, Snyder, Holston and Knop have all started since freshman year. Monserez did as well at South Carolina. Joseph has significant experience with the Canadian national team. Kellum's really the only green player. The group just needs to learn to play with each other and they'll be able to play against anyone.
However, Florida did get significant contributions from 3 freshmen this weekend for various reasons. All did well in their debuts. Gregory was the most impressive, but she had her freshman mistakes too.
DS - Allie Gregory - 5'6 OH - Morgyn Greer - 6'3 MB - Darielle King - 6'3
Still wanna see what Huskey can do even though Monserez seems like a lock.

I'm concerned with Moserez's size --she's listed at 5'9, but plays above the net like she's about 5'6. If she can run a quick offense and get Rhamat the right set height (where Dagostino often struggled), plus play exceptional defense, I'm less concerned. But, to really compete Huskey needs to develop quickly to provide more physicality at the net. Also curious if Greer will be a quick sub of the bench for Joseph, similar to Manz-Keene in '96. Same for Kellum and King. I can see Mary giving the upper classwomen confidence with the starting nod, then subbing quickly off the bench until there is a clear upper hand in talent -- she needs to groom at least one freshman OH to potentially start next year since Joseph will likely fill Holston's RS shoes (a more natural fit for Joseph, too). But then again that's probably a lot to get used to 2 new setters instead of just one. But I agree with you, Monserez's blocking worries me. She isn't as athletic and physical at the net as Dagostino was. Guess we will see as the season goes on. Shainah is out this weekend with a minor ankle sprain so I expect Morgyn and possibly Mia to get a lot of playing time. Hopefully Shainah returns the following weekend. I am excited to watch her gain more confidence and really shine on the court. I think her and Snyder can really be something out there on the left side.
