So, Sweat and Fendrick don't make it out of pool. At what point does the USAV have a conversation with this team about their health? Because technically, the USAV decides who goes to Rio. "Hey Lauren, hey Brooke, thanks for coming in. This is a little awkward but we need to talk about your recent results. I know you earned that Olympic berth, but you guys aren't healthy. Healthy you would be our best shot at that 13th place finish you've been working towards for four years, but we think now that Summer and Lane might have a better chance to get third in pool now"

Sure, it's technically possible, but can anyone actually imagine a scenario other than injury where USAV trumps the team selection for Rio this late?

I agree though, and to Guest2's point, a 17th vs. a 9th doesn't affect anything. Unless Misty is the sub for Brooke....

It looks like Day/Kessy are coming out 2nd in their pool via the 3 team tie-breaker. this should give them a chance of at least getting a 9th and gain some points on dog & pony.

If Kerri were healthy but didnt have enough finishes they would do it, but I doubt any other scenario.

The process needs to be blown up and a new one put in place

Flawed is an understatement.
Name another Olympic sport where a team that is performing poorly down the stretch still gets to rep their country in their event? Maybe England in alpine ski jumping?
In sports like gymnastics, swimming, skiing, weightlifting, skating, track & field, etc there is a "proof of peaking" event like the finals trials or meet to determine the final team members often in seconds or fractions of a point. How was such a qualification process lost to playing in the FIVB? What would be better or fairer for Team USA and or the athletes?

Does Brooke play left handed and serve underhand again or give up her spot in the Olympics? Would Fendrick still be able to go with a different partner if Brooke can't go?

Nice to see the team that put our Nick/Phil in Cincy last week gave Allison and Bruno such a tough go. Almost makes you reevaluate that loss

They have been leveraging their control over the Olympic qualifying process to ensure participation in their tour since 1996 and that is not going to change. It would be cool to have a Trials but it ain't going to happen. And I think this board is being a little hard on Fendrick/Sweat. I don't see evidence, even from recent events, that the other USA teams (besides Walsh/Ross) are playing appreciably better than them. And is there a college team that would give us a shot at a medal? I doubt it. We've got one team that can medal regardless of who the second team is.

Well Larissa got to pick a new teammate when Julianna got injured in Beijing.
I'd love to see like a Round Robin/Pool play with the top 2 teams facing off in a Final to see who gets the 2nd Olympic spot. It's really too bad Summer/Lane can't go. They are playing so so well.

Compared to what? Everyone wants to get behind Summer/Lane and they have shown some improvement this year, but on the season, playing almost exclusively Opens, their average finish is a 21st.

No, it's really not too bad Summer/Lane can't go…..they can go if they want, keeps of tickets still available for the Third World Games….
