Hopefully Summer and Lane just keep building after Rio and in too next year. Confidence is magical in Beach Volleyball for young teams trying to make their mark. Just hope they stay hungry for the next cycle and I don;t see any reason they shouldn't get 2020. They are good young team that's fun to watch.
There are a few young women's teams on the AVP that are really coming along nicely. Bensend/Urango and FLint/Larsen are a couple that come to mind.

I dont see Summer and Lane as having that much talent. Summer has one elite skill (setting) and she has been playing with much more confidence this year, but physically what does she do that well? She's slow, doesn't hit hard, isnt a very good blocker.

She sides out pretty good also. She's kinda weird to think about because she seems so slow but makes plays that other girls dont. Maybe she has really good court awareness? She don't get served that often.
Think about this. So i think from reading the boards on here we all agree Brooke struggles at times siding out. What if Brooke played with summer and got a perfect set every time? Would that make Brooke better?
I played with a group of guys last night and we got on this subject of why Brooke don't hand set because she pretty good at it. One guy(her relative) said she don't want to get called even once. That could be a critcle point. I was like but if you only got called once a game but the rest of the sets were perfect which I think makes the hitter better. Verse bump setting and never get called but giving a few bad sets through the out the game which could give away some points. I know if someone gives me a few bad sets I find myself not approaching as hard and therefore my siding out is not as great.

Im pretty sure Hyden/Bourne just got eliminated from Olympic contention. Maybe now Tri can move on.
Lots of players who have good hands in theory bump set. Notably Sinjin and Misty, who both set in college. (and Misty was player of the year setting). Brooke may have trouble setting on the sand.

Randy was such a better setter than Sinjin, and that says a lot as Sinjin was a much better setter indoors than on the beach (IMHO)….never understood why Misty didn't hand set on the beach

Agatha/Barbara since winning Worlds last year:
2015: 5th-2nd-9th-5th-2nd-3rd 2016: 3rd-5th-9th-17th
Ludwig/Walkenhorst are blowing hot and cold too. It looks like with the way the points stand currently, Walsh/Ross overtake for the #3 seed/rank even if they don't win another match this week.
With how deep the bench is for both Germany and Brazil, you have to wonder if their federations are that pleased with their Olympic teams' forms. Brazil would have probably preferred Julianna with ANYBODY over the #2 team, but I think they were locked in after winning Worlds. I'm also thinking the #3 and #4 Germans are doing better than the #2 team lately.
With how deep some of these countries are, the FIVB Opens and Grand Slams are probably tougher fields and harder tournaments to win than the Olympics.

Regarding indoor setters bump setting instead of hand setting- the mechanics and release are so different. Indoor higher contact point and a fast release. You do that outside and you will double every other ball.... There are actually a lot of indoor setters who bump- it's hard to change mechanics!

Fun win by Gibb/Patterson. Had a comfortable win in set 1 21-17, lost set 2 21-13 and then were down 9-6 in set 3 but pulled it together. Looked like they were dead in the water in set 3, but then had a few plays go their way and got a bit lucky when serving at 13-13 and Patterson had a serve roll over off the tape.

How great would it be to see Jake Gibb win one more big event?

It would help Summer/Lane but Kerri/April are veterans. A 3 setter in pool play doesnt do anything positive for them. They need to start blowing teams out in part because one of their biggest weapons, intimidation, is waning. For years teams played Kerri and thought "no way I can win" now she is vulnerable. Putting an a-whipping on some top teams this weekend would go a long way to letting the world know Kerri is really back True, cannot disagree with you totally. But, for most part, Walsh/Ross are still learning to play together against tougher competition. Eh, I'm just making excuses. They should be blowing teams out. Looks like we may have gotten our wish

Nummerdor/Varenhorst haven't played well this tournament, Casey & Jake's best shot at a medal!

i think the last time either of those teams did anything was when they met in the St. Pete's final. I think Larissa Talita got the softest draw.
Canada is not just the weakest team left, they are very easy to play in terms of strategy etc.

Canada absolutely choked that one away. Pavan had Talita in a phone booth the whole match, scared to swing. Of course Talita also blocked Barnsley 15 or so times.
I spent most of the match wondering how good Pavan/Larissa would be. The other half I spent wondering why Pavan never hits on two. Here is a good rule of thumb. When one player is 8 feet tall and the other sides out poorly, every short serve should be passed to the giant to hit on two.
