As an American, going to the middle east for the Olympic Games is a big no-no, for safety reasons. London had just host the Olympics, so they are out, and so is Australia, China, and Canada, all have hosted the Olympics not too long ago. Japan is an attractive destination, South Korea as well, all have the finances. You've obviously never been to the middle east. Abu Dhabi and Dubai are two of the safer cities I have ever been to (and I have been to most large cities in the world.) I would much rather walk the streets alone there than say Chicago. I have also been to many major cities, London, Rome, New York, Berlin, Paris, Vienna to names some... Chicago isn't that bad, aside from what the media says, Chicago's problems lie on the south side in a few small areas mostly contained and maybe one or two areas on the west side. The majority of the city including downtown and anything north and just south of the loop is very safe. This is why the media sucks, case in point, Chicago has just become a news story. Yes it's bad in the areas 99% of people would never venture into.

Its only people that live in those neborHOODS. Chicago has a mess in those areas but outside of them the other 95% of Chicago, is fine. People who live there know this, the media would have you believe otherwise.

Was more just throwing out a city to compare Dubai and Abu Dhabi than meaning to pick on Chicago itself.

Would you still feel "safe" if you were a female and wanted to drive a car, or walk around in a summer dress when it is 100+ degrees? I'd likely be sweating non-stop if walking around in a summer dress in 100+ degree weather. But yes, I would still feel safe in those two cities, even as a female driving a car -- particularly during a world sporting event. UAE is one of the most self-conscious countries when it comes to their perceived image and they'd likely ensure the safety of foreigners (male or female) if ever hosting such a large event. I know a handful of females that work in Dubai and they have never encountered any issue. Showing public affection I'd be a bit more hesitant about though.

I think that the Olympic Games are one of humanity's greatest inventions. I hope you're wrong. I admire your idealism. However, the Olympic Games has been corrupted for a long time. My earliest memory of the Olympics was the cheating of East German swimmers in the 1970s. I can't enjoy the Games now. Too commercial, too much cheating, too much fake patriotism, too much mugging for the cameras, too much forced storylines, and too much glorification of athletes who are, by and large, spoiled bullies.Welcome to America ...

People who live there know this, the media would have you believe otherwise. Mmm disagree. If you're walking around in the Loop, River North, Gold Coast, etc. during the day yeah you're totally fine. But as soon as the sun goes down and you're a twenty-something heading out to the bars, walking the dog around the block, whatever your reason for being out is you have to be REALLY aware of what's going on around you. Anybody with any sort of smarts in the city will tell you that, no matter what neighborhood you're in. EDIT: to be fair, his isn't to compare Chicago's relative safety to other major cities. I lived in Chicago many moons ago and while I do love it I like to be realistic about what it's like living in the city looking to have some fun. Both myself and countless friends had quite a few scary incidents!
