Personally I love Chicago, have had great times there. Have had PD warn against walking solo on Michigan Ave at night this year but no issues for any in our group on the trip

I think the principle that major global sporting events should not be limited to the rich developed countries is fine in theory. One does want to be more inclusive and let others join and have their day in the sun. The problem comes down to capability. Do they have the management skills and resources to pull off such an event? Some developing countries clearly do, like China for the 2008 Olympics and South Africa for the World Cup in 2010. So the solution is clear, modified the principle. Yes, retain inclusiveness as a principle and avoid being a simple "rich countries club", but also include assessment of capability as a more serious criteria in judging potential hosts. Have a good hard look at both the "hardware" and "software" infrastructure to see whether a country can do it. And also a host of ancillary but vital issues like geography and climate (Yes, Qatar, absurd example, can players really perform in a desert climate of 110 degrees heat? I don't think so. They would be lucky not to get heat stroke). Put in those criteria so only developing countries that meet it can host. Problem solved. Truly one of the best opening ceremonies in many, many years. That routine with the boxes moving so accurately and timed so precisely it had to be computerized, but no... it was done by humans. All smiling when their faces appeared at the end.

Everyone should watch the latest "Real Sports" episode. It's all about Olympic abuses and quite depressing.

Its only people that live in those neborHOODS. Chicago has a mess in those areas but outside of them the other 95% of Chicago, is fine. People who live there know this, the media would have you believe otherwise. Mmm disagree. If you're walking around in the Loop, River North, Gold Coast, etc. during the day yeah you're totally fine. But as soon as the sun goes down and you're a twenty-something heading out to the bars, walking the dog around the block, whatever your reason for being out is you have to be REALLY aware of what's going on around you. Anybody with any sort of smarts in the city will tell you that, no matter what neighborhood you're in. EDIT: to be fair, his isn't to compare Chicago's relative safety to other major cities. I lived in Chicago many moons ago and while I do love it I like to be realistic about what it's like living in the city looking to have some fun. Both myself and countless friends had quite a few scary incidents! Sorry, but you're way out of touch if you think the neighborhoods you mentioned are unsafe. Give me a break. Lol.. Yep it's real unsafe trying not to get hit by all the rolls, bentlys and lambos in the Gold Coast or even worse scary scary River north. Lmao.

AND AS LONG AS THE IOC CAN BE BOUGHT SO EASILY THIS WILL CONTINUE TO HAPPEN. VERY SAD BUT THIS IS THE STATE OF THIS EVENT RIGHT NOW. RIO WILL BE A HUGE FAILURE NOT ONLY FINANCIALLY BUT IN A LOT OF OTHER WAYS TOO. I JUST HOPE THAT NOTHING REALLY BAD HAPPENS THERE.

Yeah I think that'd be pretty accurate for most anyone with at least some money moving to the city. I lived in two different neighborhoods, South Loop and Uptown, where we heard gunshots on multiple occasions (and watched police aftermath sometimes). During the day, in the span between those neighborhoods, I 100% felt comfortable walking solo with my head down texting away. However, to say the rich folk of the Viagra Triangle are rolling around in their Bentleys cheerio-ing and flipping silver dollars to the common folk past midnight is a gross misrepresentation of Chicago nightlife. I sure hope crime against tourists in Rio is relegated to muggings without inflicting harm on the victims. That's probably the best case scenario, an act pretty commonplace on a regular day in Chicago. With the world being what it is today I'm definitely praying for the prevention of a major catastrophe at the Olympic Games. Unfortunately, you face the possibility of being a victim at marathons, nightclubs, or walking down the street of a promenade. I can't afford Rio, but if the Games were in Chicago there's no way I'd miss it. And if I could I would 100% go to Rio.

Foreigners should really be careful in Rio. Don't carry purses or bags, leave everything in your hotel room. I don't care what they're saying about stepping up security there. I'm sure we are all looking forward to the Summer Games, so are the criminals!

The Police in Brazil deal with the criminal element, a little differently than us here in North America. It will take some desperation on the vagrants part to tempt the consequences.
Of course there will be incidences, it seems unavoidable. Remember the bombing in Atlanta? Hostages in Munich? Hopefully nothing as drastic as those happen.
