Give me the BYU duo. In all my years watching MVB/WVB the are the best. Followed by Scates. Are these the guys who called the Scott Sterling match? Ya, they were phenomenal.

How many of those who responded have commented themselves? Way too many types of people to satisfy. I can't even think of any sports commentators that I love so,it doesn't matter to me while watching unless they don't know the game and make a ton of wrong calls or use another sports terminology to describe volleyball. I've called live sports, both play by play and color commentary - Sunderland is rock solid an I think he and Barnett call a great match - not always what you want to hear, but always accurate

Then they're pretty lacking.

My main complaint is that S & B do their thing almost like it is a lecture from your dad or a professor that is completely devoid of any joy or humor. The word bitter comes to mind, especially with B. I heard him make an attempt at a joke when he said something about "buying" a no touch gesture by players on one team. He was talking about believing it himself and said in his best stand up voice, "I'm buying that 87 Eldorado!"...oh boy

I think they do a great job although I have only been a VB fan since 2000.They know the game, they can share stories and I don't think their voices are annoying. They work for me.

I prefer them over some random commentators who know nothing about the sport or players I do agree with that - they have good knowledge, I guess it's just the delivery that is kind of sour. Or maybe salty is a better word. I agree. Sunderland, at least for me, comes across as kind of condescending in his negativity. It definitely doesn't work for me. That said, they do know their game. In terms of others, I don't really like Al Scates as a commentator for a couple reasons: 1) too many stories when the match is going on. Comment on the game not on you 74, 75, 76 championship teams, especially during a great rally. Its like his stories take precedent over all else. 2) basically dovetails off this. The other commentator will just defer to Scates because he's Scates and pretty much worship at the altar of Scates. I'm also not the biggest Karch fan as a commentator because he treats the audience like they are 12 yrs old. What I'd love to see, like someone else said are the BYU announcers. They aren't negative, don't treat their audience like children, and they bring an infectious enthusiasm through their love of the game.

... S & B ... completely devoid of any joy or humor. Marlowe does both! And he smiles all the time! ... come to think of it, they played that way, too. Old habits.

I can't listen to them, I now watch the match with the sound off:
1. Quickly grew tired of them reminding me that one woman plays with protective eyewear, "only in the front court", because she had an eye injury. I really don't need to hear that 4-5 times every single match. Frankly, it's just not interesting, even the first time, to know why she is doing that. 2. Have grown tired of "we'll step away" every time there is a break for commercial. The wife and I had a running count for a while. 3. "She hits it into the cross court." Which part of the court is designated as the "cross court"? I know what a cross court shot is (or "angle") but I didn't know that there is a place known as "the cross court". 4. I don't want to hear all of his old stories, that have nothing to do with this match. Go home and stare at your scrapbook, and keep your playing career to yourself. 5. How about some actual information about the match? Almost never hear how many kills a player has, what her current hitting percentage is, blocking stats, etc. I have yet to see or hear any set stat totals at the end of a set. What was each teams hitting percentage in that set? What were the blocking stats? 6. And I hope to never have to hear another "I was talking to Karch [before the match/at practice/in the men's room] and he told me..." story.
In summary, they do not make the match more interesting, informative or enjoyable than just having the sound off. It would be better if they just turned off their mics and let me listen to the sounds of the arena as if I were there.

The majority of the time Sunderland and Barnett are fine. But every once in a while they get stuck obsessing on something. Barnett nearly had a meltdown -- or at least sounded like it -- when Karch challenged a call in I think the PR match. "Karch is spending too much time on this!!! He's killing his team's momentum!" or something like that. It's not THAT big a deal. Just mention it and move on.

Barnett needs to go.
Bring Marlowe in off the beach and we'll have proper coverage.
Sunderland should continue to rant on unexcusable plays like high freeball campfires.

First let me acknowledge the right to express ones opinion. Then I will state many of these responses sound very self centered. The poster is assuming the announcers should meet their needs and not the needs of the entire audience. I have problems with people who think they should be the main target. 😬

They must tell us 10x per match exactly how the replay system works...

I like them both. They know what they are talking about. If that's arrogance, give me more.
