I love that Sunderlund often takes opportunities to explain the sport to non-converts. I watched a women's rugby game and had NO idea what was going on...wish the commentators explained the rules a little. And, there is the rub. If you were a big rugby follower, you would likely be annoyed by the constant discussion about the basic, and not so basic, rules. You know the game, you want more insight. And, that is the problem when you have to do a sport which is not widely televised. Do you talk the basics for those who don't watch on a regular basis? Or, cater to the viewer who is a big volleyball follower? It's a tough call but the trend is to speak to the new viewer. My wife was watching a match with people she works with. They kept asking her "why does that player wear a different color jersey?" And, "why doesn't the setter hit the ball over? There was no one in front of her." There are a lot of people who only watch volleyball every four years.

Kevin Barnett was brilliant during the China/Brazil match. He was very critical when he needed to be, and gave credit when it was due.
Hopefully the powers that be at Pac 12 network let him do color this year instead of play by play, as that's where he really shines.

Wonder if it was because he knew that the audience would be more volleyball fans than casual audience.

Color commentary is where he really shines though. Barnett knows the game like any other former player does. He's not exceptional in that regard. He has gotten much better with experience, but too often, he is still undisciplined, loud and egotistical--just like when he was a player.

People are complaining about Barnett and Sunderland?! They are the best commentators in Intl volleyball right now. Insightful, critical where needed, knowledgeable, and interesting.
Go listen to the Brit commentators on OBS (Olympic Broadcasting Services) that CBC/BBC/NBClive get their feed from. They know nothing about the game, keep getting plays wrong ("That ball was out" "Oh, I mean IN"; "France got an ace!" "Oh, I mean served out"), can't pronounce anyone's names right, and just plain stupid (called Anderson "Kevin Anderson" multiple times; called the Japanese Koreans multiple times; confuse players with each other when doing play-by-play).

I only wish Barnett was more like he is on The Net Live podcast. Like when he goes off and talks about his other gig (motocross)?

Worst is Brittany Hochevar on nbcolympics.com commentating on beach games. My God! Story after story..."...and that's why we call him Nick, the quick...". Don't quit your day job Brittany!

Does anyone know who is doing the Men's & Women's Indoor commentary through the streams (non-Sunderland/Barnett team)? It's pretty rough and brutal and they're butchering names. Are they through the OBS/N (Olympic Broadcast int'l feed)? Updated 8/19/2016 If anyone is interested I found out... Brittany Hochevar and Clayton Lucas... http://instagram.com/p/BJOSycGDSrM

Great that Barnett is talking about himself as much as he's talking about the Russia / Brazil semi-final.
