I provided commentary for a season and a half of college volleyball and I was actually surprised by how much control and input the athletic department had over what "color" I was supposed to be providing. Nastia Liukin said that she's told to explain things as if she's talking to an everyday girl from the Midwest who's never even seen a balance beam before. I was pretty annoyed with how much in depth sport specific tactics and strategy I was steered away from talking about.
Eventually I was replaced by a tech guy from the athletic department. And it was horrendous. Halfway through that little experiment I was asked back. Made me feel special =)

Barnett: "if you don't put the ball away, they'll make you pay time and time again" .... time and endless time again.

Just realized another thing that annoys me. Having the announcers over-enunciate names. The way Sunderland and the beach stream announcer is distracting. You can pronounce a name correctly without trying to sound so Chinese that it becomes a caricature of what it should be.

Any chance for Beth Mowins and Doc Emrick on the double sub?

i am pleased to say that FIVB brit has learned some stuff in the past 2 years & sounds much less like tennis announcer so that i dont mute him as often now. S & B, M & W are fine by me with their stories along the way while edjimucatin the masses a few times a match. was it barnett or some beach color commentator (blanton?) who was all too often rambling on about teams needing to show emotion or fire or whatever instead of having something interesting to say - glad i'm not hearing that lately.

Give me the BYU duo. In all my years watching MVB/WVB the are the best. Followed by Scates. You have got to be kidding lol

I think the BBC guy is the same Brit who was doing the CBC announcing and if so he was awful. In a match controlled by good side/bad side he didnt even mention the wind until late in game 3. I missed Marlowe.

I missed Marlowe. I noticed that too. It was kind of mystifying that it wasn't mentioned. You know Marlow and Blanton would have been all over that. That said though, I do think phil/nick needed more emotion. You saw in the previous match phil get excited and take over a match, this needed to happen today.

Speaking of boring... Indoor VB will never be a great spectator sport with announcers never talking about offensive and defensive systems.
Reason that is not in broadcasts IMO? They, and the camera, are in the wrong spot.
They can't see the routes/offense/block/defense unfolding. Thank God the BYU broadcasts include blocking as a part of the game, and views where you can see things.
When was the last time you heard announcers talk about blocking in detail? Defense? Offense? If they are court side, they literally can't see a lot of that.
So....
To make broadcasts good, get where you can see and start talking about the adjustments, decisions, and systems. You know, the interesting stuff.

My issue with Scates is not that his stories aren't insightful, but they have nothing to do with the game being played and he will continue with said stories for 5 points...and then it will remind him of another story, and then you're half way through the match and there hasn't been any actual commentary about the game. The only thing that seems to knock him out of his story track is a great play that makes him forget about the story he was telling.

You would think with the general strategy of having 2 commentators for TV - one for play-by-play and one for analysis - that you'd get that balance of commentary for those that don't know anything about the sport and those who do.
One of my pet peeves is how many times I hear the explanation of the scoring system at the start of televised beach vb games on NBC (Olympics, AVP, etc). Could you imagine that same explanation at the start of every basketball or football game? Or even tennis matches, which when you think about it can be pretty odd compared to other sports?
On well...The continued dumbing down of things for the masses.

This Brazil-France matchup is a prime example of why Barnett-Sunderland are at the top of their game.
-They have noted Italy tanking against Canada and the reasoning behind it. -Critiquing the blocking of Kevin Le Roux -Noting the play of Sergio
