Pool D in men's has been an absolute treat to watch. Three clearly underanked teams in Somoilovs/Smedins (#1 this year's tour), Schalk/Saxton (#7 this year's tour), the relatively unknown Cubans who don't compete on the world tour, along with Evandro/Pedro All three games so far have gone down to the wire in the 3rd, where the Cubans pulled a huge upset over Brazil, and the Canadians went 13-15 against Latvia and 16-14 against Brazil. Just now the Cuba vs Latvia game finished and Cuba proved their first win was not a fluke, winning the game in 3 sets Very impressed with the Cubans so far. Can they keep it up? Can't believe Brazil is facing being knocked out with a loss. They were my pick to win it at home. Need to look out for the fans if they don't get into the playoffs. Looking forward to Watching Evandro / Pedro go against Fabio & Smedins. Also, watched the Cuban team this morning. They are NO JOKE. I think they're under ranked since they just played NORCECA instead of FIVB.

I dont like how the R1 holds the server till TV gets through showing the replay. This could seriously affect momentum at some point. I like replays, so I don't mind.

Russia over Germany(Bockermann/Flugen). Liamin played well and was fun to see the Russians doing a real quick low set some of the time when receiving serve. Bockermann/Flugen out with an 0-3 record and was the 14th seed of the tournament. Liamin/Barsouk advance.
Doppler/Horst (Austria) vs Binstock/Schachter (Canada) up next.

Austria wins set 1 21-19. Ref called Binstock with a lift on the set when Austria was serving at 20-19. I'd be ok if it was obvious, but that one didn't even look bad
Canada takes set 2 21-16

Set 3 was tied 4-4 and then Doppler got some blocks going and it quickly became 7-4. Couple rallies later and now 9-4.
Feel a bit bad for this Canadian team. They've seemed to play really hard in all their matches and been close, but have come up short in all of them and look to be finishing 0-3 in the pool.
Doppler/Horst win set 3 - 15-8.

Cuban team going to win Gold? At this point I wouldn't even be surprised. To finish 3-0 in what was by far the strongest pool is serious

Fendrick/Sweat lose their last match to RUS in 3. They were up 3 or 4 points in the 3rd and blew the lead before going on to lose. They did not look good all tournament. They hardly hit and hard driven balls and even their tip/roll shots were easily picked up by the opponent most of the time.
2 of the 4 USA teams don't even make the knockout round.

Fendrick/Sweat lose to Ukolova/Birlova (Russia) in the 3rd set 13-15 after having a couple point lead there at the end and giving it away.

Wow - Latvia is out of the tournament!
... extremely stupid ranking system though that puts CAN in front of LAT: - LAT wins head-to-head against CAN - LAT has a better set ratio (4-5) compared to CAN (3-5) - LAT would have advanced if they had given away the 2nd set after 19-19 instead of going for the win

The stranger part is that the ranking between pools goes by sets ratio before points ratio, but within the pools it's points ratio. Yes also not too unhappy about CAN making the next round but it's strange that a system is penalizing LAT for winning set 2 and then losing in the 3rd. They basically qualified for the next round at 19-19 und the 2nd and then 'lost' that qualification by winning the set - not sure they were aware of this during the game...

Well, maybe karma is equalizing saxton/schalk making it in, because the two canadian women's teams are playing against each other in the round of 16.

If that's true shame on the coaches if they didn't know about it. It kind of sounds like they got hosed, since by all other logical methods they should have been probably the highest ranked 3rd place team. On to the playoffs & lets see if Dalheiser can last.
