Well, maybe karma is equalizing saxton/schalk making it in, because the two canadian women's teams are playing against each other in the round of 16. Following that logic, the two Italian men teams playing each other has something to do with an Italian women's team that has no right to play in this tournament...

Let's be real, every team in pool D got screwed. Because of the ranking system we ended up with 4 of the top 10 teams in the same pool, and unfortunately one of them had to be knocked out. It was fun as hell to watch but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth

Wow - Latvia is out of the tournament! ... extremely stupid ranking system though that puts CAN in front of LAT: - LAT wins head-to-head against CAN - LAT has a better set ratio (4-5) compared to CAN (3-5) - LAT would have advanced if they had given away the 2nd set after 19-19 instead of going for the win System is indeed incredibly stupid, but hard to generate much outrage for a team that went 1-2. The problem isnt that Canada got in instead of Latvia, its that both should have been eliminated. Evandro/Pedro get a ridiculously easy draw despite playing very poorly. Highest seed on their side of the bracket is the Russians. Meanwhile Phil and Bruno set for a second round clash with the winner getting the giant Dutch, who themselves will have to go through Reinder

Russians absolutely destroying Qatar. They are in a very strong position to medal given their draw. In particular now that everyone has had a chance to take a long look at Cuba.
Predictions:
Evandro loses to Phil in final (or Bruno, whoever wins that quarter)
Giant Dutch beat Russia for Bronze

Sure and this would be fair if the seeds themselves weren't garbage. Latvia, the 9 seed, has more wins in the last two years than the 5, 6, 7, and 8 seeds put together. Jake and Casey have one podium finish, a 2nd, in their last 15 events. The Latvians have 3 podiums in their last 4 events and two wins. Yet Casey/Jake are seeded 6 and the Latvians 9. The 8th seeded Russians havent won in two years, but they are ahead of the Latvians, who have won 5. I dont think Cuba or Canada is a top 10 team, the other teams just arent familiar with the Cubans the way they are everyone else, but having the Latvians at 9 is grossly unfair.

I mentioned this before, but Canada was 7th in this year's world tour and if you've watched them play so far in the Olympics I don't know how you wouldn't consider them top 10. It's also pretty ridiculous at this point to say the Cubans aren't top 10, hell everyone should be talking about them as contenders to win it all. I'd bet on them winning their quarter over the Russians fairly comfortably

If 4 points went differently then they wouldnt have even advanced. Had the Latvians and Brazil been familiar with them those 4 points probably go differently and Cuba is heading home. The 11th seeded Poles had a tournament earlier this year where they beat Phil, Evandro and Latvia. They arent even in the top 10. Lets not annoint Cuba just yet although they have as easy a road to the medal rounds as you can get.

Evandro/Pedro don't make it out of the round of sixteen, going down to a Russian team that made to Rio via the Continental Cup. The Brazilians were shaky from from Day One - I think the flip side of having home court advantage is the huge amount of pressure on Brazilian VB squads, and Evandro/Pedro succumbed to it.
Now an already weak upper half of the bracket is completely up for grabs, while the #1, #2, #3, and #5 seeds all fight it out in the lower half of the bracket. Ugh.

Russia was good, but its not like they set the world on fire. Pedro about as bad as I have seen him. That team has to break up now right? They are both excellent players but very mismatched. If Phil/Nick can take out Allison/Bruno any chance of Bruno/Evandro?

Dutch just obliterated Canada. Seeds holding easily on that side of the bracket. Canadian announcer now gushing over a team that lost by 15 points. The joy of diminished expectations

What are the rules for taking medical timeouts? Was just wondering during the NED vs Switzerland game what would prevent players to use it as a 'free' prolonged timeout? Obviously this was not the case in this game since the player was struggling with an injury.
