Evandro/Pedro don't make it out of the round of sixteen, going down to a Russian team that made to Rio via the Continental Cup. The Brazilians were shaky from from Day One - I think the flip side of having home court advantage is the huge amount of pressure on Brazilian VB squads, and Evandro/Pedro succumbed to it. Now an already weak upper half of the bracket is completely up for grabs, while the #1, #2, #3, and #5 seeds all fight it out in the lower half of the bracket. Ugh. Russia was good, but its not like they set the world on fire. Pedro about as bad as I have seen him. That team has to break up now right? They are both excellent players but very mismatched. If Phil/Nick can take out Allison/Bruno any chance of Bruno/Evandro? It will be interesting. Alison and Pedro are still young - both 30. Bruno is 29, Evandro 26. I think the Brazilian federation will experiment next year, and Evandro/Bruno seem like a lkely pair. I'd also keep an eye out for something like Alison/Gustavo and/or Saymon/Pedro. Brazil loves their veteran/youngster pairings.

I had my first chance to see the Cubans this afternoon. Holy crap they are legit!! Had no idea they are this good Yep, they've looked really impressive in the marches I've watched. Anybody know why they only played NORCECA? Assume their gov prevents them from playing FIVB tour. The Cuban federation watches its pennies, and once they figured out they could get to the Olympics by only playing NORCECA/Continental Cup, they saw no need to send anyone to the world tour. Plus, they are always a little worried about sending a team to, say, Italy and not seeing them again for a couple of years - as newly minted Italian citizens on the world tour.

What are the rules for taking medical timeouts? Was just wondering during the NED vs Switzerland game what would prevent players to use it as a 'free' prolonged timeout? Obviously this was not the case in this game since the player was struggling with an injury. I thought got 5 minutes when saw someone got injured the other night

I came close to defecting to Italy on my last visit. Wonder if the Cuban Federation will let them play the tour if they medal in Rio (a real possibility).

I thought got 5 minutes when saw someone got injured the other night Yeah, five minutes from the time medical personnel reach the player. And it's a rule that has been abused in the past, to the point of the FIVB changing the rule some years back. Sometimes referred to as the Tian Jia rule, after a Chinese player who would mysteriously go down to "heatstroke" whenever she fell behind in a match. Now, no more medical TO's for heat-related issues.

Does Nummerdor have a chance for gold? Could he get golds in 2 different sports 20 years apart?

I am watching the round of 16 behind so I apologize if this has already been addressedin the thread, I didn't want any spoilers so didn't read.
I just got done waatching the Italians vs Italians on NBCOlympic stream. At end of 2nd game it was 21-20 Carambula/Rangieri just scored 5 unanswered and a play happened where Rangieri lost the point but wanted a challenge that looks like the ref was denying the challenge. It goes to commercial break and then comes back and the ref granted a challenge for Lupo/Nicholai at 22-21 that was successful that ended the match. Anyone see what happened?
Also, the announcer mentioned one of the Italian teams fighting with each other and punches thrown, anyone know the story behind that?
BTW, great job NBCOlympics for f'n up a lot of streams, like this one, where it cuts to an add and misses a few points and you don't get to see what happens at the end. The Olympics and you can't even get that $#!+ right.

Canada probably the last team with a real chance to play spoiler against the top 3 teams but Germany is handling them with no problem so far. Women's side completely predictable thus far.

Germany looks really deadly in their dismantling of the Canada team which had been playing well. Ludwig really wants this medal to cement herself among the greats. Larissa and Talita are really gonna have to step their games up and will certainly be playing with a lot more pressure than the Germans.

The Canadian player not named Pavan was the weakest player on the court by far.
The German team was solid. But, European Championships notwithstanding, certainly Ludwig isn't one of the top three players in the world.

But, European Championships notwithstanding, certainly Ludwig isn't one of the top three players in the world. Normally thats true but Pavan was very poor today. She probably had 6-10 attacks and got blocked 4 or 5 times. Also she had no presence at the net herself. Wish we could see her play with someone like Larissa. That German team has won 5 of 12 this year. If Laura, the better of the two, isnt top 3 then how are they winning so much? Now the Swiss and Talita are competing to see who can play tighter with game 1 on the line. Only Larissa seems composed then cuts in the net to give Swiss game point. They finally convert.

Same story in the second. Talita and the Swiss both playing badly, ref interjects himself to call a terrible lift to put Brazil up 9-7, but they are right there to be taken if the Swiss can just steady out and stop making bonehead plays

Some really awful reffing. After calling a lift on a Swiss overhand dig the refs let Brazil get away with two that looked near identical. Then when the Swiss challenged something, the head ref called a challenge for a net, which didnt seem to be what the Swiss girl wanted challenged.
Then Talita hit one clearly out and somehow there was a touch call, thankfully overruled. Also Larissa chucked a ball that wasnt called. If Brazil dumps this one, it wont be because they didnt get help and at 17-15 it looks like they will lose
