While it's one thing for the Brazilian's to cheer their home team (understandable), some of the reaction makes me wonder.
1) Did a lot of the negative pub and statements leading up to the Olympics even suggesting they should be moved, many of which came out thru the US media, create a resentment of American athletics in this Olympics?
a) Multiple Stories on pathogens and exposure to potential illness in/near the beach venues?
b) stories on the corruption in Brazil, focusing on the state of economy and political system,
c) US's best golfers staying home, citing the 'conditions and fear'
d) Predicted traffic nightmares and a race to complete venues
so that,
1) Our VB teams in particular being clearly rooted against
2) A judge issuing the Passport hold on Lochte and other swimmers
3) Booing Justin Gatlin (really? just for being the 2nd best sprinter in the world for over a decade?)
4) Booing gymnasts
Is the Lochte situation 'payback' for the culmination of 'bad media' resulting from the story? i.e. the Brazilians not happy about the report, which there seems to be some inconsistency on
or am I just forgetful of past Olympic reaction to Americans?
I don't recall Australians or Chinese or Euros being as decidely anti-US as these Olympics appear to be

This forum is full of US people specifically rooting against the Brazilian volleyball teams. Why would it seem odd to you that Brazilians might specifically root against US volleyball teams?
And people boo Gatlin because he has two positive drug tests in his record.

Argentina isn't necessarily getting a warm reception either
I don't think it's strictly an "anti-US" thing. Just from watching volleyball besides US and Brazil are playing, the Brazilians seem to be cheering for the underdogs, and booing the favorites. It seems to be happening in other sports as well

Latin cultures (both in Europe and Latin America) boo much more liberally.

Or whistle...
Brazil is one of the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China), emerging economies all of which have been struggling post-crash. The past role of the US in supporting dictatorships and oligarchs in Latin America doesn't help.

I've been all over the world and have discovered that everyone hates the United States, but everyone wants to live here.

Thread has it all wrong. Brazilians love to boo. They relish it. Particularly in the context of sports (notice the US was not boo'ed during the opening ceremony...but Russia was). If Philly were a country they'd be Brazil. Just lacking the prettier women and better scenery. I've been to Brazil. Probably one of the least anti-American places I've ever been (along with Norway and Japan). I think it's unfortunate that their reflexive boo habits are creating a false impression of Brazilian people. And Americans aren't the only ones they boo.
Brazilians embrace American people and culture in a way that many Europeans are reluctant to do, and without pretense or trace of resentment.

yeah, the booing isn't aimed just at the usa. wasn't there a russian swimmer who was cleared to compete right before the olympics? she was booed too. (ironically, in part, b/c of controversy fanned by a us swimmer who said the russian shouldn't be allowed to swim b/c of her doping past...)
also, it's not just brazilians who love to boo ... americans do it too ... (ok, well these clips are just new york fans ... haha ... but you get it ...)
