>-(Gorf)-<[} link=board=general&thread=1092813233&start=134#8 date=1092898024] You also brought Jerritt into the conversation and made comments about Mick in terms of the players not knowing anything about him that are equally associated with Jerritt. Plus, as was pointing out by SoBB those recruits prob ably spent more time around Mick with the national team development programs than they would have been allowed to spend with Jerritt (or other USC staff) by NCAA regulations on recruiting visits and conversations. I have no firsthand (or secondhand, or thirdhand) info about Jerritt. Some people on this board speak ill of him. Could be true. However, I DO have firsthand (and secondhand AND thirdhand) info about Mick, so it is about he that I speak. High school players who spend summers at Colorado Springs at National Team development programs hardly ever SEE Mick, and are NOT coached by him. Mick spends his time coaching The National Team, not the developmental players. Other coaches are brought in for the summer for that purpose.

Speaking of "fat" or chunky volleyball players, just look at Wan Li Na and Hao Yang of China! It didn't matter how "big" they were, they helped China beat the US in Olympics' first match.

Sounds like fun! When do we get together to do this? But, yes, you're right. I don't have the facts. (But, neither do you.) These are just opinions based on appearences. VBCoach, we know each other. You know I respect your opinions. But you are dead wrong about this. As a matter of fact, YOU are the one with an opinion based solely on appearance and that's our point. Berg is not even close to being fat. I know this from being around her for four years (court order notwithstanding) AND from the results. You are perpetuating a viewpoint that, I believe, has harmed LB in the past. I think this viewpoint was why she missed out on the National Team the first couple of times she tried out, why she was never voted AA, and why she has always been seriously underappreciated as an athlete/setter. So, yes, it bugs me when I hear this. I have nothing against you or Vball818. I generally agree with your posts. But you are both WAY off base here. That's my last comment on the subject. How about this instead: How about those Koreans? First it's speed skating. Now gymnastics. How many times can we cheat them out of gold?

Wow. All of this talk about fat. All of this talk about Mick. Let's talk about how fat Mick is! ;D Just kidding. Mick isn't fat, pudgy, chunky or anything. And I could care less if he was. My favorite coach still is and always will be Mary Wise, so Mick is just a big FAT zero in my book. Mary - I LOVE YOU!

Back to the match.......
I watched the match last night. OMG..... did anyone else think they were watching a high school match? O.K.... maybe college. One of the commentators even made a comment that the level of volleyball was about the same as a high school volleyball match.
Haneef looked horrible. Her timing was way off. She is 6-7, but her spikes were barely going over the net. The commentator kept mentioning how late she was getting to the ball. She needs to take advantage of her height and hit the ball at a higher point of contact. If her timing is off.... they are better off with Nancy in the match who hits a much quicker tempo set on the right side. If she hit like that against a better team, her stats would have been MUCH worse.
Daniel Scott looked mentally out of the match as well.
Sykora was really struggling as well. I've never seen her pass so many balls over the net.
USA's middles combined for TWO blocks in a five game match!!!! That is flat out horrible. Especially since DOM runs a pretty slow, predictable offense.
Let's hope they find some rhythm for the next two matches.... they'll need it.

Marlenis Costa was a big ol' tank and she helped Cuba to three gold medals - some big girls can play.
i think Berg looks healthy, definitely not pudgy.

Jerritt has no ability to develop players and no ability to manage a team. he has taken a vball powerhouse of Texas to a team that didn't make it into the tourney after making it in 2 years before that. He was getting better recruits, but doing worse with the team. The team that he inherited from Jim Moore is not as good as the one he had. half of the recruits from his number two class last year are terrible. Jessica Curtis can jump, but that is where her vball ability ends, she only played when they needed someone b/c of injuries. And Jenny Andrew is easier to read as a setter than 12 year olds that i have seen play. She is too weak to push the ball outside, sometimes she would set 2's when she was in trouble and completely trap the middle who isn't expecting that set. She decides her sets before the play and makes terrible decisions. jerritt should have seen this in these players. He also has had many players leave. From what i hear, he is a jerk and liar, and a terrible coach who did not have the experience to take over a program like texas. His 2 years head coaching at usc don't really qualify him b/c he was a puppet for Mick Haley. prior to that he had been an assistant there for 4 years and then a high school coach before that. That doesn't seem like enough experience these days to become a head coach at a big D1 school. His lack of experience is showing in his results.

>-(Gorf)-<[} link=board=general&thread=1092813233&start=130#8 date=1092897158] Those rankings are made based on how well those players did in high school and club volleyball not on how well they've actually played at a collegiate level. From what I've seen since Jerritt took over at Texas his teams have performed well under expectations. No, John Tawa did explain that the ranking is based on how the players will perform in the college level.

I watched Costa played so many times and she is definitely no big ol' tank, I check her bios on v-spirit.com, she is a little taller than Berg and is more than 10 pounds lighter than Berg

No, John Tawa did explain that the ranking is based on how the players will perform in the college level. How they were EXPECTED to perform at the college level. It would have beeen impossible for them to have beeen ranked based on how they actually performed at the college level because they hadn't yet played in any college matches at that point. Jerritt's 2nd ranked recruiting class don't seem to have lived up to that 2nd place ranking thus far. Time will tell if they eventually do live up to that ranking.

Actually, percentage of fat measurements of ARE a good indicator of physical fitness. Didn't day she wasn't good. Just fat. All the time! It's fun! I also argue with my invisible friend. I'll relate a story about the daughter of a friend of mine that you would probably also have considered fat by looking at the "subcutaneous fat" on her face. She played volleyball locally in high school. She was good, but not great. One of her HS teammates went on to play MB for the Gophers. In college she went to UW Madison and joined their crew / rowing team for 4 years. After graduation she still had that "subcutaneous fat" on her face, but her overall body fat percentage was very much on the lower end of the scale for women. Her overall visible shape was still much more along the lines of Lindsey Berg than that of the currently thinned down version of Logan Tom. I can pretty much garantee you wouldn't have wanted to try tackling her unless you wanted to bounce off or be broken in to little pieces.

I can't believe that Gorf and GatorVball have actually been defending Mick Haley on this board. I don't think you guys should listen to VBCoach. He clearly has something personal against Mick and probably some personal issues w/ body image. Lindsay Berg is a terrific player. She does a great job. She's in good shape. Anyone training under Toshi is in good shape. I think that Lindsay simply has a bigger build. Shaq is a big fellow, but he is not fat. It's all muscle. I suspect that if VBCoach did date a former National Teamer, it was one of the girls that got cut. Hence, the bitterness. But I'm reluctant to believe he had any sort of relation w/ a former player considering how tactless he is w/ his posts. The girl would have to have really bad taste.

The only thing that I have against Mick Haley is that I love this game, and he is bad for it. He has unnecessarily hurt people that I know (and many that I don't know.) He was petty, cruel and is disliked by lots of people who were connected with him in some way during his tenure as Head Coach of the USA National Team. Some posters on this board also seem to know what was going on at that time, and have agreed with me. I have never dated any girl who was ever on the USA National Team, but I know a lot of them. If you want to defend Mick Haley, then do so. But don't try to use circular reasoning with me. (Only brilliant volleyball coaches and wonderful people are chosen to be the Head Coach of The USA Womens National Team. Mick Haley was a Head Coach of The USA Womens National Team. Therefore, Mick Haley is a brilliant volleyball coach and a wonderful person.) Tell us what you know and how you know it. This board is for the presantation of facts and the discussion of opinions. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, be it supported or unsupported. However, it's always better if you can support it.
