The last FIVB international event is to take place at the end of August with the elite 12 teams playing in each gender.
Looking at the rankings, Laura and Kira are not in the top 20 even, but since it's in their home country, I'm sure they will get the wildcard, especially having won last year in Toronto and just won the World Champs in Vienna.
But, who else will be playing in this elite tournament?

I think would be fair to have Laura & Kira plus the next TOP 11 ranked teams.

From the top of my head, I think for women's, it'll be these teams:
-Larissa/Talita (BRA) -Agatha/Duda (BRA) -Sarah Pavan/Melissa Humana-Parades (CAN) -Brooke Sweat/Summer Ross (USA) -Laura Ludwig/Kira Walkenhurst (GER) -- probably wildcard -Labourdeur/Sude (GER) -Anouk Verge-Depre/Joana Heidrich (SUI) -Betschart/Huberli (SUI) -Hermonova/Slukova (CZE) -Bawden/Clancy (AUS) -Bansley/Wilkerson (CAN)
But fingers crossed that April Ross and Lauren Fendrick can get a wildcard.
Looking at last year, four wild cards were awarded for each gender, with home country having two wild cards each. But since Labourdeur and Sude are already top 8, they should be guaranteed a spot in the main draw. Ludwig and Walkenhurst were mostly out this season due to injuries, but after today's gold medal win, they should get a wildcard.

What a year for Summer/Brooke. I defy anyone to say they would have picked Ross/Sweat as a top ten team in the world and they got there through mental toughness and consistency. Brooke Sweat especially is someone who doesn't have a peer on that list. I think she is the shortest by a few inches and she has been so good teams often serve Summer

On the official website, the schedule lists pool play, then round of 16, so perhaps there's more than the 12 elite teams this year.

The official list hasn't actually came out yet, I should have stated it, but these are just my guesses 😂 Alison and Bruno didn't have that great of a year compared to Evandro/Andre or Saymon/Alvaro. I only remember them winning gold in the Rio 4 star event back in May/June.

Everything is so even this year hard to make a compelling case for any one team, but if I were rewriting the system I would say a win in a 4 or 5 star should equal an automatic berth

They should announce the list soon, since the event starts August 22nd. It's basically right after AVP Manhattan Beach.
Actually, there was going to be another 5 star event in Rome, but not enough funding.

Actually, there was going to be another 5 star event in Rome, but not enough funding. Is that a bad sign of things to come, or typical? Happens darn near every year. FIVB contracts with local promoter, local promoter goes broke (for whatever reason), event cancelled or moved back if another promoter steps in.
