Angel will have two years to play beach so maybe this year will be a transition year and maybe crack the flights next year. Mags, Huddleston and Homayun are seniors so at least three spots will open up next season.

I've been a little MIA due to school and out of the loop, but I am fairly sure that Gaskin is the only one from the indoor squad to join the team. Maybe Granato is still deciding, but for now, it's just Gaskin who is confirmed.

It’s official...Angel Gaskin’s name have been added to the roster. She is the only new name from the fall roster so it does not look like players like Casey Castillo and McKenna Granato will be playing beach. She will have two years to play. hawaiiathletics.com/roster.aspx?path=wsvb

Yesterday was first practice and media day for the 2018/19 Sandbows! No surprise transfers or indoor players. Gaskin the only indoor crossover. http://instagr.am/p/BscZQ4PH_cM

My early prediction for the coaches' picks for the 2019 lineup (without seeing how things pan out in practice and partially based on Fall competition):
1. Maglio and Homayun 2. Martin and Dreeuws 3. Ozee and Loker 4. Scoles and Napolean 5. Huddleston and Russo

Here is the lineup I would like to see:
1. Maglio and Ozee 2. Martin and Dreeuws 3. Scoles and Homayun 4. Loker and Huddleston 5. Russo and Napolean
Do we need a Hawaii 2019 thread?
Alternate lineup (only because Homayun is probably the best defender and deserves to play higher up in the lineup. I put her with Scoles because her high beach IQ would be of benefit to Scoles and also because Scoles is mo).
1. Maglio and Ozee 2. Martin and Homayun 3. Scoles and Dreeuws 4. Loker and Huddleston 5. Russo and Napolean
OR
1. Maglio and Martin 2. Scoles and Ozee 3. Loker and Homayun 4. Russo and Huddleston 5. Gaskin and Napolean OR 1. Maglio and Martin 2. Ozee and Homayun 3. Loker and Huddleston 4. Russo and Dreeuws 5. Gaskin and Napolean This is assuming Gaskin can get her skills up in time for the competition.

Yeah we should probably start a 2019 one.
I don't see Maglio being partnered with another tall player. Having her with Martin or Ozee takes away them from being the primary blocker which is their strengths. Maglio is best with a smaller player because she is tall and can easily attack on two which important when the smaller player gets picked on. I still see Homayun with Maglio, will make a strong top pair.
I like that idea of having Russo and Napoleon together, might be a bit young but both are shorter players who like playing up. Could work.

While I agree that Mags and Ari are an obvious choice, I'm not sure they can be successful against the top teams at the #1 flight. Ari is a great defensive player but she is limited in her offense. If they are paired together, I will cheer for them and I am sure they will do everything they can to be their best. I think they are just less of a versatile pair and they will have some difficulty with a Graudina (6'1") /Bustamante (6') type pair. Yes, Mags played with Katie Spieler and was successful (and also with Weaver at 5'11"), but Katie is exceptional for her height and even she has her limitations. I do not believe "Maglio is best with a smaller player because she is tall...and can easily attack on two". I actually think opponents' game plan would be more predictable...serve Ari and force Maglio to go over on two the majority of the time. True, that takes pressure off the smaller player (but perhaps puts more pressure on the taller one), but if the opponent serves tough and Ari isn't able to put up a good first pass, she will be forced to take a majority of the shots. Mags is good (as a pair) with a small defender but even better with a taller defender who can also play offense. I believe with a taller defender, Maglio and partner could compete with any team in the country. Nuss (LSU) is maybe the current college exception as a short (successful) defender, most of the top defenders are at least 5'8"-5"10" now. Ozee has spent the last 6-7 months working on playing as a defender (much like Monkhouse (6') did with Martin (6'1"). Ari is listed at 5"8" but I think she is closer to 5'6"/7". I see our top 10 players currently in the depth chart (not necessarily in this order) as: 1. Maglio 2. Martin 3. Ozee 4. Scoles 5. Loker 6. Russo 7. Homayun 8. Dreeuws 9. Huddleston 10. Napolean This means 6 blockers and 4 defenders. Out these 10 players, one pair would conceivably have two "taller" players together. Otherwise, another smaller defender would have to step up and crack the lineup and oust one of the big players. I don't see that happening this season with the current defenders (both Banz and Ables have had injuries and haven't played much). The team this year actually has more depth at blockers than they did last year (last year we had Kan/Weaver and Dreeuws/Zalopany as two pairs and while both really good this year is deeper in blocking). The team actually can be more competitive than I originally thought they would be. I'm just not sure playing it safe is going to win against the best. I think my choices for flights could be really competitive. IMO of course.

Wolfgang did you want to change this thread to 2018/2019 or should we just start a 2019 thread?
