Yesterday the Governor of Georgia announced that schools would be closed until the end of the year. This will leave High Schools scrambling for Varsity Volleyball season as tryouts are from the beginning of May until the end of the school year. From my understanding, if you do not have tryouts in this window, you cannot until July 29th with competition starting on August 5th. Tryouts are optional, so they may form teams in a different way.

Kansas closed all K-12 schools for the remainder of the year on March 18. Fascinating to see how states have acted differently. On March 18 - there were 7,700 positive cases and 112 deaths in the US. The State of KS at that time had 16 positives and 1 death. States reacting differently , having to compete for vents/PPE, reluctance for our President to enact the Federal Govt and influencers/Right wing news outlets denying the magnitude of this virus have and are creating a horrific problem. Dr. Fauci has increased security detail due to increased death threat! Fauci's guidance to Trump for the country to remain as locked down as possible to help control the virus spread has not earned fans among some fervent right-wing voices. Kelly from Kansas recognized this problem early and did the responsible thing. The jerkoff Governors of Florida abd Texas (and Lt. Gov! Idiot) have monumental problems on their hands for waiting so long. I was beyond "fascinated" 2 months. The underlying problems of disparity in healthcare, education, wages and between and within states are now fully exposed. In 2 weeks 10 million people have filed for unemployment. 10 million! Some areas expect to get to 25-30% unemployment. Our American "individualism" ethos is just the opposite of what we need facing this catastrophe....and yet some people in power are so afraid to share the blanket. Until WE and US emerges, "fascination" will continue it seems (smh). Our sport will see clubs fold and high level bankruptcies declared. Take a look and watch the USOC over the next months as they and underlying bodies wither on the vine. (HINT) Again I would wager 10-15% of people here think I'm overreacting, 35-40% want to believe it will dissolve and we will be on the road to recovery by June but a growing 50% are feeling the effects personally in their pockets and jobs and fully understand where we are headed. I will say this now.....we will need some heavy hitters to step up and personally keep the USAV afloat. Do the math when you lose the income sponsors, Qualifers, Bid Tourneys, and Both Nationals.....its devastating..... Wait...what? ?? 🤯 It is that everything you post is in a 'Political' context. I get it - you are diehard Liberal Democrat. But that everything has to be stated in this political context degrades anything you have to say...

How do they do tryouts for move-ins and such? I have never heard of a state trying out that early. And here I am worried about our season that starts in Aug. 😬

And here I am worried about our season that starts in Aug. 😬 Since there is no cap on players, if someone moves into the district and meets all academic and state/regional/district mandated eligibility, the coach can hold an individual workout and place the student on the appropriate team (Freshman/JV/Varsity). Tryouts are optional per state rules. I have not looked at regional or district to see if they are mandated or not, but the state explicitly announces the window of May 1 through the end of the school year. This always presents and issue when a new coach is hired from outside the school because their contract doesn’t start until the school year starts.

I think there are some clubs in deep dookie. They took in all of this money in November and December and the season has been cut short. Refunds are due. I bet those refunds don't happen because they've spent the $$$.

I bet those refunds don't happen because they've spent the $$$. Yep. I've listened in on a couple of the JVA or Art of Coaching Volleyball Zoom meetings. Most are being up front and honest and saying we'll refund every penny that isn't a sunk cost. So all money they get back from cancelled tournaments, court rental, coaches' travel, etc. will get sent back to families. And the cash they don't have won't be refunded.

Of course everyone is going to say that. But what is their definition of a sunk cost. Does that cover the rent on their building for the rest of the year? What about the salaries of the staff for the rest of the year? They could make the argument that those are sunk costs. I’m not arguing that they are amor aren’t, but no club is going to empty their bank account. Especially as their summer programs are in jeopardy.

Clubs that own their facilities are definitely in a much worse position. I'd imagine they'd only refund those things I listed above. Refunded tourney fees, coach travel that didn't happen, and court rentals if they don't own their facility.

Maybe it depends on the club? I can’t imagine the blowback from parents of clubs are keeping dues for 3-4 months lost of a 7-8 month season. If they don’t give out refunds, they will probably lose quit a few players.

Also, if this is how all clubs operate (and it's what I've been hearing), then the playing field is even. For what it's worth, all of the club directors on those Zoom calls have said parent responses have been very understanding.

Will they be as understanding when the season is canceled and it ends up being 3-4 months? 2) Maybe it’s simply a sign of who is capable of paying for club volleyball. So many people in society are struggling with unemployment right now that every single paycheck and expense matters (myself included) but perhaps club volleyball parents are inherently well off enough to not feel that immediate burden.
