A whole D1 conference just took a pass on basketball... I know the Ivy league is different, but that's still a bit of a "wow." Cal St Northridge women's basketball also cancelled when they didn't have enough players after opt outs. That conference is probably the only one where cancelling the basketball season doesn’t cause financial ruin for every athletic department in the conference. Maybe the Patriot League.

If 31 other conferences cancel basketball season, the spring 2021 volleyball season will be the least of our concerns. College sports will be on the brink of a collapse.

I do t think there are 31 other conferences that will cancel basketball. But probably at least 30 at the D 1 level.
I don’t see how DII and DIII schools will be able To have winter and spring seasons. The cost for just testing is so prohibitively high, they won’t be able to afford it.

For what it’s worth, the NCAA downgraded volleyball, if played in masks, to ‘Intermediate Risk’. That means the NCAA recommendation is “ 25%-50% surveillance testing every one to two weeks.” Unless the city and state might require more, that isn’t too bad. That’s something like 5 tests per week? ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/ssi/COVID/SSI_ResocializationDevelopingStandardsSecondEdition.pdf(Appendix page 3)

I would assume the idea is not that much different from many other industries during COVID, yes everything costs more and is a pain with restrictions. The alternative is the loss of revenue completely and shutting down (so in enrollment driven universities- these students not coming back to the dorms and/or even taking classes entirely). Seems expensive to test, also seems expensive to not have as many students paying you thousands of dollars.

I’d been giving the spring season a 50/50 shot but I’m down to 30/70 now. I think the BW and Ivy are the tip of the iceberg.
