Really exciting roster. Tuaniga is a natural leader. She'll immediately be the best setter in the conference; great hands, she communicates really well with her hitters, brings confidence & energy, and her jump spin serve is a weapon. Whenever we get to see a Big West season, I'm expecting to see Beach challenge for the title.

I'm excited too for the Beach, even though I'm a Hawaii fan, still would like to see the Beach on the national scene again, and having a player the calibre of Mia Tuaniga is a start in the right direction.

Tuaniga has not played one collegiate match yet and Long Beach State fans are already naming an era after her. LOL
Now maybe Tuaniga goes on to do great things at Da Beach like her older brother did or maybe she ends up being like Schea Cotton. Long time Beach men's hoops fans may remember him. The hype was this LB St. recruit at one point was supposed to be the next Michael Jordan. No joke, during high school at Mater Dei, hence the Tuaniga comparison, Cotton may have had more hype around him than LeBron James did in high school. But Schea Cotton never even made it to the NBA.
One more recent volleyball example was Lindsey Ruddins. UCSB fans had all but crowned her Big West Freshman of the Year before she played a single collegiate match. But then Ruddins got injured early her freshman year and all the hype talk suddenly stopped. Fortunately Ruddins got a medical redshirt, she recovered and won Freshman of the Year the next season.
I'm just saying give players praise for things they actually accomplish and not just giving them props based on potential.

Your concern is understandable and it's good to question hype, so I'll try to elaborate. I'm not basing anything on potential. I'm basing my assessment on how good she is right now. Forget the fact that she's the reigning Gatorade POY (CA) or that she's the JNT setter, have you ever been in a gym with Mia? Or Lindsey Ruddins for that matter? I know both and as good as Ruddins was at that age, Tuaniga is just a different kid - and I'm not even a Beach fan. Her volley IQ is off the charts and she's a natural leader in the gym, even when she's surrounded by older, more experienced players. She sees the floor far better than you'd expect at her age & her back sets are accurate and consistent, so she'll be able to get Martinez involved - even when the passing isn't great. She communicates really well with her hitters and and has a very positive energy. And that isn't even mentioning her serve... I know that she hasn't been in the gym with her new teammates yet, but I understand that'll be happening soon. Injuries happen and COVID seems likely to delay us actually seeing her play, but whenever she DOES get on the floor, she'll dominate. At this level, she's just too good not to. Hope that explains some of the optimism.

This just comes off as rude and uninformed.

I hope Tuaniga can help attract some big hitters. I’m sure a lot of girls would love to have a setter of Mia’s caliber. Think about how Carlini really helped turn the Wisconsin program around. Not saying Wisconsin was bad before Carlini or anything, but they weren’t landing the kind of recruits they are now before her. Having a really dominant hitter on a lower level team doesn’t attract other great players as much as having an elite setter in my opinion. That’s why I think Ruddins at UCSB didn’t help attract a ton of complimentary talent. Even though they were getting there her senior season with almost upsetting Texas.

They actually already have the best terminating pin combo in the BW in Kashauna Williams and Allison Martinez. Jaylen Jordan joins this year and as long as she's healthy, will provide very good ball control. And then Starr Williams comes in next year as a top 30 ranked player in her class. Setter really was the position they needed to strengthen.

This just comes off as rude and uninformed. Rude? Lol how soft are you? How is that uninformed what I said? The truth hurts apparently. Btw sweetheart, I’m allowed an opinion. It’s a discussion board. You don’t like it, refrain from reading. Precisely, genius. It is a discussion board. Aka I'm allowed to respond to your opinion (for example, if I think it's rude). You don't like my response, "don't read it, sweetheart"

You don't like my response, "don't read it, sweetheart" Grow some thicker skin. LBSU isn’t good, and naming an era after a player who hasn’t played a college game is comical. Please challenge the notion that they arent a top 70 program type of good, and how all the talent is just overflowing from that program. Please do, you’ll just be showing exactly how uninformed you are. Also learn how to quote before attempting to do so again. First of all, you disagreed with the notion that they were talented. That is what I was calling rude. Their roster says otherwise and I expect they could be the top team in their conference by next season because of the roster and who they're bringing in. That doesn't mean they will stay there or that they will win the NC or that LBSU is having a resurgence as a program and Stanford should all of a sudden watch out. I have no issue with you being skeptical of the program's ability to capitalize on the talent, I would say that's perfectly warranted.

Just playing the sport at a D-1 program? News flash, plenty of players that arent good at all get on rosters throughout the country every year based on the size of women’s collegiate volleyball. Yes, LBSU is neither good nor talented at that level. If it were, why haven’t they made a tournament in what, the past 5-6 years? What exactly is their roster telling you? Talent is in the eyes of the beholder apparently lol. I’ll leave it at that.

The biggest thing for Long Beach is going to be getting people who can pass. That team in 2014(?) had some pretty good ball control with Jackson at libero and Brinke and Reid on the outside, and that was basically the last decent team that Long Beach had. Yeah they had Nele Barber for a couple of years after that and she was a stud, but besides her no one else was that good. Tuaniga is a great setter, but if they can't pass, what's the point? Williams and Martinez, as great as they are offensively, aren't exactly stand out passers.
