Before becoming the head coach, Kiraly served the team as an assistant coach from 2009 to 2012. He helped lead the Americans to a silver medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. ....and Kawika would follow that path too...at some point. I was thinking of this too. This would probably be Kawika's last year of duty as a national player. He should try being in the coaching staff.

How many foreign coaches have won international tournaments since 2008?
McCutcheon Antiga Heynen Sammelvuo
The trend is there. Just get one that knows the team or coached a weaker team.

Hugh played and worked in the USA before coaching. Antiga played in Poland before coaching. Summelvuo also played and coached in Russia before taking over the National Team. The USA System is very unique. A foreign coach would struggle to understand it. What we need is a FULL TIME coach. If that's Speraw, awesome! But USA deserves and needs someone committed to the growth and development of the program on a full time basis.

Heard a rumour today that there is unrest in the squad and the guys aren’t happy with Speraw. It could just be that Tokyo is the last run. Obviously all speculation but makes for another level of intrigue. If this is true then Hunt is the guy imo.

No way.

I think a full time coach might not be useful since all the pro players won't be in the gym half the year anyways, I compare it to the Men's basketball, they are too busy in the NBA so they use an NBA coach for the few months they play together. I don't know how much money coaches for volleyball get but I wouldn't think full time would be worth the money for anyone.

I am not advocating for Speraw to leave or anything like that, but one name that interests me when he is eventually not the coach is Luka Slabe. He has been a head coach at the college, professional and national team level. He is also doing great work with Kiraly.

It’s too bad that Speraw doesn’t seem to want to bring in an assistant who he could groom and ultimately hand the baton to when the moment was right. He seems like a guy who likes to live in his own head and not share/mentor like others have in the past. There seems to be no rhyme or reason why he makes some of the substitutes he makes and he doesn’t confer with anyone or make it a teaching moment. Not that he has to as the head coach but if you were paying it forward you would include others as part of the process.

I think he has with Mike Wall, Brian Thornton, and Rob Neilson over the past two quads. It seems that Fuerbringer is his right hand. We have seen him take the most active of roles on the sidelines. Though they are close to each other in age (so not sure he would hand over the reigns).
These are other reasons I like Luka. He knows the men's international game inside and out. He basically grew up in it. I have a feeling he is more likely to take over the women's program when Karch hangs it up, though he could find himself on the men's bench if the opportunity presents itself.

Unless you have inside knowledge your comment “the main core guys ..” is the exact same … a rumour. It sounds more like a rumor of the guys that are sitting at like 10th on the depth chart who feel like they should be in consideration for spots that are in consideration, even though they are far off from the actual team. It’s too bad that Speraw doesn’t seem to want to bring in an assistant who he could groom and ultimately hand the baton to when the moment was right. Not that he has to as the head coach but if you were paying it forward you would include others as part of the process. I would probably disagree. The most important thing should be Speraw making the current team the best they can be, so providing them with the best possible staff he can put together. Training an apprentice, unless they truly are the best option for his staff, seems like it is not the best use of a PT Coaches time.

Speraw is an elite coach. I guess you can gripe about USA serving- we seem to miss too many in the 20’s- but that’s merely an observation and I could be very wrong. The real issue is not having Russel. He was terminating OOS as well as any pin in the world....
