What if Speraw goes to USA and says he wants to stay? Does he have enough credibility left to sign an extension and keep the job?
To be fair he’s been with the program a long time and has a gold and a bronze on his bookshelf.
Plus everyone has to acknowledge how hard the pandemic seasons have been. I think if he wants the job it’s his. Not to mention that if he’s allowed to do both one more quad he’s likely set for life financially.
But, UCLA should be a hard no if he asks. His split time hasn’t done their program any favours.

Speraw said back in the time he switched from UCI to UCLA, that staying in the UC system was important because he'd be fully vested in the UC retirement program when he turned 50, which he reaches this October (because he started working at UCLA pretty much after he graduated). So he's probably in a good place financially, which could maybe mean he could choose one gig or the other to focus on, going forward. The fact that he has two young children and has been enduring the NT travel schedule for a long time now, I'd bet is going to weigh heavily on any decision of his, especially after all the extra effort needed (and maybe needed again) to deal with COVID.

Most coaches consider that the best job possible in men's VB or top 3 at least and opportunities to get that are once in a lifetime or once in 2 lifetimes more like it, regardless of how great you are as a coach. I would guess if he picked one it would be UCLA and if the national team moves locations it won't even be a decision. My guess; total speculation based on USAV's MO, is UCLA and the MNT will have the same coach they had last year for the next 3 years at least. I don't think there are any realistic and willing options out there within the US and going to a foreign coach seems like a big stretch for USAV who like to control things and are "risk adverse" for lack of a better term

Speraw was fully vested after 5 years in the UC retirement system. He is eligible to begin drawing benefits, and receiving life-time health benefits once he turns 50 (or in actuality, I believe 52 is the age requirement)—which may be what you were actually referring to). Nonetheless, drawing retirement at that age isn’t a good financial decision, because like Social Security, age is a significant limiting factor in the formula.

He took the women to gold, he might want to make that attempt for the men. I think it's Speraws job, but if Karch wants it, I think he gets it.

A coach with zero NCAA affiliations would be great for the sport and the country. Plus, there would literally be so much to talk about for three years it would be amazing. I look forward to reading Karch’s book whenever it comes because you know it’s coming.

Hugh went from winning a gold with the men to trying with the women in the next quad.
Winning with the US men could add even more luster to his already phenomenal volleyball resume.

If Karch can coach a men's team to gold in 2024, that would be a lot of luster! I think it is a rebuilding quad unfortunately.

Really the questions are in the middle and backups at setter and opposite. Seems like that’s a good place to start from

I really like Brenden Sander as well, so if he continues to grow he could potentially make the Paris roster. As far as middle goes, gotta think Stahl, Jendryk, and Averill will be fixtures throughout the Paris quad. Only thing is Averill is not that young. Hopefully we get some younger guys cycling into the pipeline too. For opposite, that kinda worries me because Anderson will be old and having a capable back up will be important. Ensing obviously got the Tokyo nod, but idk what his ceiling will look like especially since he’s playing in Israel.

I still don't understand how Jaeschke got almost zero meaningful playing time in 2 consecutive Olympics... According to stats, he had an okay season in Italy. Is he not 100%? For middles I would like to see Huhmann getting more playing time. Where is he playing for next season? We really don't have a lot of options at opposite.... Almost all top NCAA opposites are foreigners. I like DeWeese, don't know if he's the answer...

I like Randy too but him at Opp would be a big surprise to me, maybe at OH after a few years learning reception.

Seems like that’s a good place to start from I feel like the current pins will be too old, and the next class behind them are not as good compared to other countries. This year everyone but TJ was not 100%. Some of that is bad luck/timing but the old players get the more frequently they are on the DL, not the other way around. Matt, Taylor, Thomas, Aaron all have a lot of miles on the odometer and in 3 years I think chances are at least 1 or 2 are not available. We need at least 2 new legit pins on roster in addition to what is there now. 3 years is not enough time for any of what we got now in the pipeline to develop. Middles can get there and S and L will be good for at least 2024.

Jenny Lang Ping is supposedly moving back to the US and has a demonstrated track record of success. Maybe she is ready for a new challenge?

Not to be sexist but don’t kid yourself having a women’s coach for the men’s team quite yet. Let’s pump the brakes on iron hammer. Let it happen in nfl, nba, nhl, or mlb first. Would hate for our men’s vball team to become “woke” with a women’s head coach and our entire reason of people paying attention is because of that
