But I've also heard commentators say a different name back in 2017-18, and in any case, this year's CVL will be "tournament style" held.... somewhere.

Who is Chinas heir apparent at setter when ding is done I see Yao Di taking over the starting role for the time being while China explores new backup options at the setter position. Ding Xia did say she wants to stay till Paris 2024, but that'll depend on how well she can maintain her form. They had a third setter Diao Linyu this past cycle, but she's never made a big impact when she did get the opportunity and will likely be cut. Yao Di has some pretty heavy injuries so IDK if she wants to continue (besides, unlike previous years, medal prospects are not as high in 2022...). But she has not been passing worse than Ding Xia in 2021 and should probably start regardless if Ding Xia wants to stay or not. I can't see them taking both to the important competitions, they're gonna be in their early/mid 30s come Paris 2024. I think one old setter and rotating new setters for 2022 VNL and if the new ones are all terrible then the other one of Yao Di/Ding Xia will return to put out the flames for 2022 WCh.
edit: Diao Linyu was the 2nd setter in all of 2017 and 2018 (because Jiangsu won CVL in 2016-17) until the 2018 Asian Games when she knocked herself out with her setting: www.bilibili.com/video/BV1Uf4y1B794.

Cool! Thanks!!! National Games had spectators (a lot of spectators), so if you've got your shots and are already in China then you can probably get a ticket.

They had a third setter Diao Linyu this past cycle, but she's never made a big impact when she did get the opportunity and will likely be cut. Unless Diao somehow dramatically improves this Olympic cycle I don't see her being the main setter. Yao is...so-so, she is good for Tianjin, but on the NT, she still can be a bit iffy. Ding Xia...that really depends on her form. Now the setter position is a little less physically taxing than say the outside hitter or libero position, so barring injury, a setter can usually last longer than some other players in other positions. Still, the question is, can Ding last until Paris...as in her can she maintain her form? As for the Libero position, Wang Mengjie will likely be done after a medicore Tokyo performance. Lin Li is also regarded as too old for the position. Jiangsu's Ni Feifan might be the next libero, assuming whoever is the next NT coach agree with Lang Ping she is a promising player with great potential.

I hear that Zhang might take a break as well, but not for the rumors suggesting she's going to have a baby. It seems that her knee injury has relapsed sometime during the National Games and she may take this year off to recover.
On a side note Vargas is the first foreigner to arrive in China.

I wonder how Tianjin will line up their pins; I also wonder if anyone is able to mount serious opposition to Tianjin.

Most likely Li with either Wang Yizhu/Chen Boya as alternating OHs depending who's performing well and Vargas at OPP. I seen some fans suggest Yang Yi should play at OH for more stability. Did you hear anything about Wang Yuanyuan leaving? Something about a "career change" based on what she posted on her weibo after the National Games.

Probably will skip VNL 2022 as well, but hopefully back in time for the world championships.
