Badgers had 3 freshman on the floor yesterday, and Robinson (also a freshman based on COVID19 Bonus eligibility) playing 1st BT road game in front of an opposing team's crowd, if we put this match in proper perspective, a five-game loss ia not really a bad thing the Badgers also had arguably the best backrow in the country, that has members who returned for an additional year. They had arguably the most terminal hitter in the country, who also has started for now 5 years, and one of the best setters in college volleyball, who surprise surprise-has started for now 5 years. And Robinson played in the Final Four last year…regardless of capacity. The MD arena capacity causing an issue is an alarming thing given the crowds at PSU, Purdue, OSU, Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota…and so on. Who are you trying to fool here?

wait Barnes didn’t play libero? Against Northern Illinois last Saturday, Civita was libero and Barnes was DS. So Civita was in serve receive in six rotations instead of three and Barnes three instead of six. Earthshattering! I mean you can say earth shattering to be facetious but Barnes transferred out of MN because she didn’t want to be just a DS, she wanted to be libero and CC beat her out for it. So fairly ironic any time she isn’t suiting up for libero at Wisconsin. Quite “earthshattering”

Uh oh.. well done Maryland! There goes Wisconsin’s top 4 seed. I guess this is just down to coaching - sorry Badger fans. But when you have Rettke, Loberg, Hilley plus arguably the best trio of back row players in the nation (Barnes, Civita and the Iowa transfer) you don’t lose to a team like Maryland. Faced with an injury to a starting middle blocker and 1 week to prepare for conference play Sheffield decides to…….re-shuffle the stellar back row by taking the L-jersey off his Sr. All-American; bench his senior OH and put a huge load on a Freshman OH coming off injury; and starting another freshman who is #4 on the depth chart…..When the primary focus should have been working out the blocking and getting the Freshman middle comfortable alongside what was a pretty stable line-up. Seeds of the Maryland loss were sown the weekend before by over coaching & messing with things that weren’t broke. What, he took Barnes out of libero jersey? Why???

They played really badly. If they only play somewhat badly, they win in four. If they play just average, it's a sweep. They played really badly. It’s a really bad thing if your goal is a B1G Championship and a top 4 NCAA seed. It was not the time for the coach to play with the lineup…. Now if you are telling me Jardine was outplaying Loberg in practice, that’s a different thing. I’d like Dennis to ask that question at the next presser.

Because Civita is really good, and has worked really hard to get to where she is this year, and Sheffield decided to reward that in one non-conference match against an opponent that they figured to handle pretty easily. It is not a big deal.

My point is that he shouldn’t be messing with a back row that was playing at an incredibly high level prior to the NIU match, and for whatever reason wasn’t that great last night. He treated Maryland like a non-con opponent and tinkered with the OH position and got burned unnecessarily.

Coaches mess with things that are working. It's what they do.
Everything that is working can potentially be made to work better. If you don't mess with stuff that is working, you will never find that potential.

I am not worried about this loss. Maryland is probably better than recent years would suggest and the Badgers have some things to figure out. They still have all the pieces to be there at the end.

I agree. Maryland has been playing very well so far this season. Even though Wisconsin is no long undefeated, this game serves as a great loss to learn from. I think it’s way better to lose a couple games now and grow as a team than to be blindsided once the national tourney starts
