It wasn't a simple mispronunciation, it seemed like he made it up out of whole cloth. not to be rude or anything, but why? it's just the pronounciation of a different language? He was pronouncing it wrong How do you think it should be pronounced? The official WSU guidance from their media guide is "ya-hala-sha-va". I am pretty sure that the second syllable is in fact only one syllable rather than two (how English speakers would say "hala"). I think it's probably something more like "hla" where the "hl" is a sound that isn't in English. There is a recording of her saying her own name, and it sounds like maybe there are not four syllables, much less five, but since I'm sure they worked with her on the pronunciation guide, I would guess she's OK with us English speakers saying "ya-hala-sha-va". I try to make sure that I spell it correctly: Magda Jehlářová (as she spells it herself on her Instagram account). I think that probably breaks down as Je=ya hlá=hala řo=sha vá=va. This is her third season in the PAC and she was conference and NATIONAL freshman of the year two years ago, so I'm kind of surprised people are still hearing "ya-hala-sha-va" for the first time. |

Sure, those eeastern European names can be tough for Americans, but at least give it a decent try.Since watching on TV is the only way people ever hear a lot of these names,it's not only disrespectful to the player, it can easily propagate itself. Also might be a bit baffling for people looking at the box score the next day. I feel like sometimes, announcers look at the name and try to say it out loud but it ends up coming out wrong, and I don't think they intentionally mean to do that. Other times, I feel like they are trying to get something out while their mind is still trying to process the name. Same thing happened with UCSB's announcer last night but instead of trying to pronounce a name he was trying to pronounce a town in Hawai'i. He fumbled on it, tried to collect himself and then admitted to not knowing how to say it. But I agree with you in the sense that if you're just putting a name together and not even trying to understand it and making up your own name, that is disrespectful. |

However it’s pronounced, I’m glad Stanford was able to defend her well ;) She got 12 kills, 3 aces, and was the high point-scorer for the Cougars. She did only hit .267, which is low for her. But I'm not sure that means Stanford "defended her well" so much as that they beat the rest of the WSU team. |

Baird didn’t practice all week. They weren’t sure they were gonna have her for the match. She struggled quite a bit but the team showed some grit. Good thing she was able to play. They needed her even with all the errors and shaky passing. This makes sense. I noticed early on in the match (before she started showing signs of having an off night) Hambly motioned for her to sit down during the time outs. IMO Baird started out with decent energy, and managed to sustain it for about two sets, but sets three and four were a real grind and you could see it was taking a toll. I guess she needed an IV. Fortunately, in the beginning of set five Pukis chose or was forced to set the left side where Kipp was waiting to gobble up predictable hits. |

For me the main confusion was that "sh" sound for the r-hacek. Secondary was making the h into a full syllable. I looked up the Czech r-hacek sound online, and sh isn't a good approximation, although there's nothing in English that's really close. |

Really an important win for Stanford. So pleased about the defense and passing - it has been improving the past few matches. Oglivie's positioning for the most part was pretty solid. She was touching balls even if they weren't dug. Lougeay OTOH, was a little stiff legged and reacted late on several hits and her reads left her out of position several times. I don't have VM stats on Stanford's passing, but I think it was better than WSU's. Stanford was aced eight times as I recall which wasn't great, but they were picking on Baird who, as we know, was lucky to even be on the floor. |
