Crenshaw is just one of my favorite players. So happy at how well she’s playing late this season. She took a lot of heat last season and showed an amazing amount of mental toughness. She had some rough matches but I don’t recall her ever letting anything affect her attitude.

Is Katy Ryan the front runner for Pac 12 FOY? Who else would be her competition? Luper hasn't played enough matches so maybe Tuaniga? I think Stanford's Miner has it locked in. Why do most people think Miner should be FOY? Stanford is at #6 and WSU at #4 while Miner has so many great hitters around her.

I believe Ryan is in the conversation, but not really with much chance to win it. However, I am starting to reassess whether Miner is actually the best freshman setter this year. Tuaniga is just so impressive to watch.

I’d say there’s also a bias in favor of children of famous parents, but I don’t know who actually votes.

I think K Ryan will be selected for All Pac team, while Miner will not make the team. With this, Ryan should be FOY over Miner.

The winner of FOY is the player who does best in the voting for the All-Freshman team. There is no linkage to the voting for the All-Conference team.

The requirement is to play in 2/3 of the conference matches. That ends up being either 12 or 13 (depending on how they handle rounding). Miner has played in 17 conference matches (and still has one more to play).

First, Washington State played a tough match, particularly on floor defense. A whole lot of balls came up on very strong hits. Their strategy of serving Hoffman did OK in the first set, as she adjusted well in the second half. However, it really yielded fruit in the second set as Claire struggled on receive until UW was behind 1-13. Cook's adjustment by bringing in Crehshaw across the front to provide another passer all of the way around provided some relief and UW scored 17 -12 through the last half of the second (of course, that still means losing 25-18). UW kept that pace for the rest of the match. Besides providing the passing relief as a 6 position OH, Crenshaw hit well too. Loved to see her get to show what she can do in her normal position.

The best crowd of the season (4079) saw UW overcome adversity once again and win their fifth Pac 12 championship in the last nine years. The atmosphere was more electric than I've seen in a long time, with plenty of Cougars fans in attendance.
I really like this Cougars team. If I weren't a Dawg fan, this would be my favorite team in the conference. Led by the amazing Hannah Pukis, they show a ton of spunk and really get after it defensively. Pukis can do it all. She conducted a dumping/attacking clinic this afternoon (recording 16 attacks) and was a very effective digger. Her hands are really soft and she has good location. More than that, she's a calm, positive leader on a team that has suffered a serious loss with the injury to Pia Timmer. I'll miss Penny Tusa's all-around game but she is apparently the only Cougar not returning. I also have to give a shout-out to Julia Norville, who was a one-woman wrecking crew with her serve in set #2, and who was solid in serve receive and came up with some excellent digs on hard hits.
It was another tale of two matches for Claire Hoffman. The Cougars targeted her all afternoon on serve receive and, in the first couple sets, she was pretty shaky. It actually looked like she was losing confidence in herself, but maybe that was just me projecting. Her offense was not up to snuff early on either. But Hoffman has a way of righting the ship. If I were to pick a key turning point in the match, it was when she was serving at or around 5-5 in the fourth set. The Cougars were playing amazing defense to start this set and you began to wonder what a fifth set might look like. Anyway, Claire has really upped her service game and recorded three aces, IIRC, during this run. That includes a serve after Greney called a timeout where the bottom just dropped out. Soon it was UW 12-6 and the Huskies never looked back. I was also surprised to see that Claire hit .333 for the match with 14 kills. The first couple sets she was hovering around .200.
I would like to see Cook reconsider whether to start Bush over Hoffman. There is enough evidence to justify this decision. Crenshaw ended up hitting .188 but looked pretty good in doing so, making only two errors, and dealing with a lot of out-of-system stuff. Bush is error-prone. At the very least, I think Cook should be ready with a quick hook if Emoni is chalking up errors.
It was good to see Emma Calle serving and in the back row. It remains unclear who the Huskies will go with as a serving specialist(s). Personally, I'd rather see Calle and Houghton than Endsley, if only for their better defense.
Speaking of which, I don't think Cook will be pleased at the defense in the first two sets. Simply too many diggable balls hitting the floor. Bays will need to play better, as will all the Huskies on defense, in the tournament.
A couple other notes. It was great to see Sanders have such a big blocking match in her conference farewell. And Marin Grote is just such a big-time, efficient hitter -- .632 with no errors on 19 swings.
I wish I could say that I'm looking forward to seeing the Huskies again in Hec Ed this year, but a long-awaited vacation in Maui beckons. It won't be the first time I'll watch tournament volleyball from the islands.
