18 Open bid deciders are just starting at NLQ Club V vs. Premier Nebraska FC Elite vs. Northern Lights FC Elite already has their bid. How many are available? Two. Third place match will be played if FC Elite wins, and they just won big in the first over NL.

You weren't kidding about 1st Alliance. They've been really stomping people. Looks like there was only one set where they actually had any pressure on them.
Also, someone spill the tea on the 18's!
1st Alliance just picked up another 2-0 in the Gold opener against Skyline. Skyline gave it a good run, just not quite enough. I think Ebony Nwanebu was about ready to suit up and sub in.
Awesome early call on 1st Alliance in the 17's.
They didn't lose a set and it appears they barely blinked an eyelash during their run.

They are a great group of athletes. So fun and lighthearted. Grace Egan was fantastic this weekend, among many others.

For the Nebraska fans, your possible future setter (after Kennedi Orr) won the 18 USA division at NLQ with a bunch of 17 year olds.
Major props to Kairos out of Sioux Falls, SD. Not sure if they accepted a bid or if they'll move up, but it's great to see teams from smaller cities having a lot of success on a bigger stage.
It's great for the world of volleyball.

Was mistaken, there were three bids at NLQ. I failed to read beyond “winner of this pool qualifies.”
MAVS KC won the third place match to qualify in 17 Open. A third place match was not necessary in 18 Open because the second-place team in one of the pools was FC Elite, who already qualified in Chicago. So, the third bid automatically went to the other second-place pool team, Club V.

Yeah, sucks to be Vital. They lost 14-16 to Club V earlier in the day which could have been their bid...

and...how to qualify: Open- qualifier/at large National- region USA-qualifier/at large Liberty-qualifier/at large American-qualifier/region Freedom-Region Patriot-pay to play
this is priority order for bids usage. Open is clearly the best teams...after that, it gets murky....

I know it's been a little covered, but man Northern Lights this weekend was CRAZY!! Here were some of my observations:
Officiating was suspect at best, especially in several of the bid matches. The 3rd place 17-Open match between MAVs and Dynasty was terribly officiated, and I'm pretty sure both coaches were asking for a new up ref in the 3rd set (looked like there was some discussion with the down official by both coaches). I would say there were probably 3 or 4 bad ball handling call on both teams (none of them should have been called - which is not what I would normally say!) I remember 2 lifts being called and I don't know what the ref saw but I didn't see it the same way and I was pretty much on the same angle, and a questionable out call around the antenna play. This same up official was also part of the 18 Open drama with a protest. She carded parents of 1 team with a yellow, then later went straight to a red for a player. The red card was protested and the protesting team won the protest, only to lose the next point for match point. I don't remember for sure, but she might have been the same official that had the other big protest earlier in the morning in the NE Premier match as well where a coach would not leave the court and had to have the head official sitting behind the coach for the rest of the match. There was another protest from the morning wave in 17 USA as well. I don't know that I have ever seen that many protests in such a short period of time.
From the play standpoint... 17's field was loaded and the play was amazing! 1st Alliance looked great, and I caught the 3rd place match with MAVs and Dynasty since it was win for a bid, lose and miss. The play was high level, even outside of the officiating. MAVs has a lefty that was really hurting dynasty when swinging from the left side, Dynasty is playing a 3 middle offense and has some great size and ball control. Setting was a little shaky at times I thought, maybe trying to force some plays too often. 18 Open was a mess, but also with some understanding we know why. Dynasty 18-Black as the 1 seed was without a starting right side that played great at MLK (don't know where she was at but that made a big difference in their offense and a HUGE difference in their block) and the smaller outside was banged up - didn't see a lot of power from her, more cuts and shots. They also seemed to be playing flat Day 1 for whatever reason, maybe thought pool was easy and tried to coast, they played flat every time I watched and some different rotations. Something must have changed though because the energy and effort on Day 2 and 3 they were a different team, just a day too late. PVA was a something completely different, they had everyone playing but didn't seem to have that edge an Open level team needs, but they already earned their bid so that might have been it for sure. They also looked pretty flat on the court and didn't execute very well at all, this team was a bigger surprise since they were healthy. KC Power got their starting setter (Draper) back, I expect their level of play will be on the upswing as they continue to play with her running the offense. They did seem to ease her in a little bit, but she makes them much better. NL looked solid, but they were also pretty up and down with their play, their outsides can control a match for better or for worse - they seem to go on cold runs at times that hurt the team. They can be eliminated with aggressive serving. This team needs to run the middles more. Premier played much better this weekend that at MLK, but some of the teams they were playing were not as talented either.
One thing that stuck out to me that I don't have an answer for: What happened in the Idaho ONE v. Pohaku match on day 3?

Yeah, sucks to be Vital. They lost 14-16 to Club V earlier in the day which could have been their bid... Vital was so close! It was tough for them to rebound after losing to Club V. They needed to realize that they were still in the hunt for a bid if they had beaten Premier. Premier on the other hand saw their opportunity and took it. Great job by them after the disappointing weekend they had at the KC qualifier.

Kinda hoping for a Premier-NL rematch…for reasons. The rematch was a good game! Can't believe these two teams have already faced each other THREE times in the span of two weeks. More than likely they see each other again in Phoenix, the way things are going.
