Looks like Bruna will not be returning back to Illinois. She isnt transferring but she will not be coming back she will be returning back to Croatia. That is very unfortunate I though she would for sure be the OH2. Looks like we are thin at the pins again Not thin - even thinner. Someone on the right side needs to learn to hit on the left side.

It’s quite silly to worry about Mosher transferring bc she is sitting behind a 3 year big ten setter especially when she’s got the next 3 years locked up. it’s a true worry especially when the returning starter is inconsistent with her placement but consistently a head case. i know that sounds harsher than i mean it to be, but i really do wish that Tamas would “Hames” Brown and have her play a different role on the team this season and pass the baton to mosher. focus on the future and giving Mosher true B1G experience now. Please don’t send the hounds after me…i’m just looking for a fresh start at the setter spot.

That's 2 players (Ellie, Bruna) we thought would be a huge impact on the team and never played much due to injuries. Are any of our MB crew athletic enough to play OH? If Collins/Swanson start, that leaves Whittington, Bingham, Hinton & Bohm on the bench. Maybe start training someone on the OH. I would put Mosher in as a DS and hit out of the back row.

My only concern with playing Mosher as a DS is that setters never learn to receive serve. Serve receive is a difficult skill, a skill the Illini have struggled with the last few years, witness all the comments on this thread about our serve receive. At least if she plays back row for Burbage she will be playing right back, a position with which she is very familiar.

I trust Tamas and co. to select the best setter based on results from practice. He's shown a willingness to experiment, so I'm sure we'll see some different looks.
It's amazing how many VT threads devolve into complaints about their current setter. The backup setter might be even more popular than the backup quarterback. ha.

Hey, just saw in the 2022 D1 Schedules thread that Villanova has Illinois on their preseason slate at the Dayton Invitational on September 10. Have to imagine the Illini will also play Dayton and Missouri State that weekend.

There are many armchair coaches without a clue on this board. Many have never played the game, let along coached volleyball.

Huh. I both played and coached. That has not saved me from frequently being clueless about Illini volleyball. Nor has it stopped me from clueless posting.

To address mosser pointillinois and @pasquale 1) I think brown gets in her own head quite a bit. there have been multiple matches throughout her career where i felt we lost because of her set selection and placement. Her offensive scheme (yes, i’m saying her’s, because i’m sure Chris has given a RS SR+ more freedom in running the offense) is often very predictable and the opposing block typically where to camp out. Does our passing help the situation? no, it does not…I think we know what Brown is capable of doing by this point and when she’s good, she’s good but it can also get very ugly, very quickly. She can be a little spastic, which isn’t helpful when we’re in close sets and can’t finish them out (which has happened on more occasions than i’d like to have seen). 2) I 100% trust this coaching staff to pick the right players…I’m not claiming to know more than Chris, Jen, Eli, or Krista. What my hope for this season is, that we give Mosher the opportunity to start and play until proven otherwise. Am i glad that Mosher has Brown (who learned under JP) to lean on for help and advice? absolutely. But i’m looking to the next 3-4 years of what Mosher can do as our “QB” on the court vs. Brown’s extra “covid” year. 3) Thank you Pasquale for the comment, which i fully support. Thankfully i’ve played the game from 7th grade through college and coached Club (14s, 16s, 17s, 18s) on the boys and girls end plus a few illini camps under the Hambly era. I take my Illini-ship all the way to the Laura Debruler/Jo Bangert/Ashley Edinger days. I’d like to think i’m no slouch when i’m giving my opinions/thoughts on illinois vb…but that’s the beauty of this forum, we don’t all have to agree.

Thanks for the elaboration liberovb10. I guess we'll just need to wait and see what Tamas does. Moving on, any guesses as to the schedule release? The Dayton tourney looks nice. Is the B1G/Pac-12 challenge still a thing? Would really enjoy seeing some ACC teams in Huff.

Also is Gregus going to finally be healthy enough to play. Another player going on 2 years of injuries and not playing.

I like that we have options. If Bruna is leaving that gives us another open scholie. Definitely need an OH. We can get walk on DS's. The addition of Burbage solves the OPP question. If our team levels up again as many of the players did last year, we are going to have a great year. Look at how much Collins & Swanson improved. Collins couldn't hit a slide to save her life and Swanson was not a threat offensively the year before. Both drastically improved their game. Raina had flashes of dominance last year (Kentucky tourney game). If she can have those kind of games on a consistent basis. We are going to be dangerous. Whittington played great last year & I think Bingham is going to surprise people. I feel for Hinton as she is the odd person out. Maybe she can train as a back up OH?
The elephant in the room is passing. We had Cooney passing last year which I feel was a major weakness. Kuper is gone but Barnes can fill in. If Sakoda, Mosher & possibly Gregus can level up - we should be in good shape. Another season that will be bad for my high blood pressure. Os-Kee-Wow-Wow!

Does Bruna open up a scholarship? We definitely need more help at outside. Need to figure which options are still available in the portal.
