So does anyone know who we have eyes on in the class of 2024?? First - what positions will we need for that class? Here’s a breakdown by position who we’re projected to have going into 2024 as of right now (assuming no one’s brought back for bonus covid year for the sake of the exercise). 3 setters (Mosher, May, Imoto-Eakin) 4 middles (Whittington, Bingham, Bohm, Dean) 1 opposite (Burbage) 2 outside hitters (Stephenson, de Boer) 4 DS/L (Barnes, Gregus, Sakoda, Barry) So I’d think mainly outside hitters and opposite, and at least one DS/L with only Barry returning from that group in 2025. Get a setter and middles in 2025- setter redshirts for Brooke’s senior season. What’s your take, Friday?

Between covid bonus year and the transfer portal (both transfers in and transfers out) figuring out what we will need from the 2024 class will be a challenge. My guess is Tamas will recruit the class looking for the best volleyball players regardless of position, using the transfer portal to plug holes that develop. I think the days of balancing a roster based upon high school recruiting are gone. Having said all that, recruiting and retaining pin hitters and passers has become a real challenge for this coaching staff and has to be a focus of our recruiting efforts.

I think Setter is definite. May is a backup/practice setter and I’m not familiar with the 3rd.
Can you ever have too many outsides?
I’d love to see them bring in a true Libero and not a converted short OH.

Brandi Donnelly, converted softball player and outside hitter at a relatively small school and whose only scholarship offer was to play softball at a D2 school, did ok as a libero. Jennifer Beltran was recruited as a libero and was similarly great. Caroline Barnes was recruited as a DS, and I think she will be a pleasant surprise as our libero for the next three years. Lily Barry would probably only play libero had she attended a large school instead of the school she attends. Much harder to predict which great athlete will be an effective libero than to predict which 6’3” hitter will transition to the college game. I trust Tamas ability to identify talent and to develop the talent he is able to persuade to attend UIUC. The trick is to get them here.

I wonder if it will hurt Illinois that they didn’t play spring matches this year.

Caroline will be senior when the 2024 class is a freshman. So someone to learn from her and then replace her the next year. I'm thinking Lexi Rodriguez, Gillian Grimes, Ava Falduto - PSAs who have always played DS/Libero at a high level. Barry will be a good DS as she attacks from back row very well.
