Putting some crazy ish out there more because this could be a thought for next year: CC has set some nice 2 balls when pressed to do so, and I believe I heard a broadcaster say she’s the 3rd option as setter in practice (or maybe the setter on the second team?). Could Sheff work some mid-season magic like he did with Demps last year and convert CC into either one of the 6-2 setters, the front row setter in the 5-2, or the primary setter in the 5-1? When it comes to someone having to sit, it seems to be leaning toward MJ’s floor defense being the weak link so far (not saying she’s horrible, but relative to others). This crazy idea could put a tall blocking option up front, allows Devyn to slide in to the middle with Hart (who was OK enough to go 5), put the Smrek/Demps platoon back in place (5-2 or 5-1), and put in more DS options for better defense (5-1). This probably isn’t the “simple solution” or even an actual solution, but… something needs to change, it seems, if it’s not a matter of the team meshing with the 6-2 system. The version of it I heard or read (and I don't recall where) was the discussion of 'emergency' setter was a joking one, and that Joslyn Boyer was jokingly unhappy with CC being 'the answer', because Boyer was a setter in high school. (thinking about it a little more, maybe it was during the radio broadcast of the Campbell match?)

I hadn’t heard that about Boyer, but her role isn’t likely to ever be setter here. Was that where she was starting at Iowa before transferring? I couldn't remember if she was their setter or Libero?
I hope she’s not seriously disappointed in her role, and is still being a team player and positive influence in the locker room.

(And she was still in 'not playing tonight' clothes last night. I wonder if she's be getting the serving opportunities that Gregorski is getting if she were healthy - though Liz has done pretty well with it.)

If there’s no match thread for today, it looks like Boyer and McCaa aren’t dressed for playing today.

I’m hopeful it’s a matter of the team leaving with each other and the 6-2 system. There have been lots of instances of passers and defenders not meshing next to each other yet. And setting connections. Plenty of time for those things to work themselves out. At this point last season, Smrek certainly wasn’t dominating teams like she did in the national championship.

So, listening to Kelly and Gary in the match interviews talking about Florida, you got two diagnoses.
One from Kelly is that they were nervous, possibly because of the atmosphere, and were subject to hesitation plays. They didn't get a single kill on freeballs for instance. They let a number of balls fall because of confusion. Lots of hitting errors. They just gave too many points away and didn't take care of opportunities.
White ascribes the passing woes to coordination between the back row passers. Says they are all very good individually, but they have to agree how to handle the seams between them. Florida was hitting the seam all night and there was a lot of hesitation, according to white. Was glad they got better as the match went on. Badgers have to do better not planting serves right at passers, but hitting into space around them. They did that better today.

I thought heading into the season that they could lose 2-3 matches in preseason due to growing pains with the new personnel and system. From that point of view, two close five set losses doesn't seem like a bad return. I got frustrated on Friday I think because I really wanted to have them pay off that fan support at the Kohl Center.
But to be honest, they are kind of at the point I thought they would be. There are a lot of aspects that can get better. Virtually everything except serving in fact.
Also Orzol is the best player on the team right now.

You pass both short and deep for your seem and don’t worry about the other. Either that or libero takes both seems was preferred, but GG is not ready for that.
